Finding visible faces in mesh

Hi,

If I have a mesh, e.g. two intersecting tori ('toruses'):

For a given direction how can I find all faces that are visible?


Any input welcome!

to add:

the actual problem I'd like to solve is which polygons of a mesh can be seen from any point between horizon and sky (northern hemisphere of the sky).

Here's a way a co-worker showed me last week; project uvs from the camera, and do what you need based on that. uvs less than 0 or greater than 1 aren't in the view.
