Point Normals not displaying

Just starting out using Houdini, so I'm not certain if i'm missing something fairly obvious, but on my Macbook Pro using Houdini Apprentice, the show point normals button doesn't work. Primitive normals work though as well as point numbers and show points. Also strangely creating a custom Scene Visualizer for normals works.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but after I uninstall and try to reinstall, the installer says that it's upgrading rather than installing.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Important specs:
Houdini Apprentice 15.0.244.16
Mac OS X v 10.9.5
8 GB Ram
NVIDIA Geforce GT 330M

hello.
1. update driver of your graphic card to last version.
2. try to install last daily builds.
eventually: on your view port press D key on keyboard and then from markers tab and under point items turn Normals on.
just make sure the icon at right on Opposite of Normals set to always visible.
all settings should be like below image.
after doing that you will see Point Normals.
thanks.

thanks for taking time to replying.

1. i'm on a macbook pro and from what i've found, graphics drivers are included in the OS updates. so i updated from mavericks to yosemite. still no change.

2. updated from 15.0.244 to 15.0.339. still no change.

i went through the display options and made sure the settings were as you had suggested, still didn't work.

i sort of get them show up by making a custom vizualizer. however, sometimes they go away and have to restart houdini to get them to show again. oddly though the vectors only extend in X and Y directions. the normals definitely have a Z component though because if i change the visualizer style from vector to text there are three values.

i've run additional various maintenance programs as well as turning off the automatic graphics switching and resetting the PRAM. i've attached a couple pictures as well as the .hip file to hopefully help.
