Hi there – was wondering if houdini can split geometry (1 object) based on a shape (plane) – the idea is to split an architeual facade into multiple parts. We use maya usualy but its not managing the polycount (over 10million tri) – if this is possible in houdini we are considering to pick up a license. Thanks!

Does the Boolean SOP work? If it's an infinite plane, you could try the Clip SOP. Depending on what you mean by “split … into multiple parts”, a Group SOP, Delete SOP, Blast SOP, or Voronoi Fracture SOP might do what you need. 10 million might take a while to handle for a complicated operation like Boolean or Voronoi Fracture, but should work.

I think you can try things out in Houdini Apprentice for free to see if Houdini will suit your needs before buying a license. I'm not an expert in licensing, but I do know that if you buy a license, you can do a one-time submission of scene files and assets you made in Apprentice to SideFX support to be converted for commercial use.
Writing code for fun and profit since... 2005? Wow, I'm getting old.
