Is there a way to Deselect all selected nodes so that nothing is visible/selected?

there isn't a one button solution other than the regular tools…
you could make a shelf tool that wrapped the related commands.

Depending on exactly what you want to do:
For windows using ctrl + a is very useful.
also, clicking in empty space.
