Can polyextrude individual elements but not connected

I am attempting to extrude the thickness of an object using a color ramp. This actually works when I extrude as individual elements; however, the entire object expands in a uniform manner when I use connected components. Is there anyway I can extrude along a color ramp while using connected components?
