I would suggest this page to start:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=192&Itemid=351 [sidefx.com]
This includes the user guide lessons and video tutorials by Peter Quint. From there you can choose learning materials which suit your particular interests.
The FIRST STEPS webinars are also a good place to start:

Thanks for the answer. What about Torque DTS? Is it updated? Or the same as in H11?
The Torque exporter will not be in H12. You will still be able to run H11 with your H12 license key and export from there but we have removed Torque for Houdini as of H12. We were not in a position to update the exporter to our satisfaction to meet the needs of H12. We are looking at other export options for independent gamers to other game engines but nothing will be ready for the release of H12.

Will the new apprentice licence have the same limitations as before? Specifically, will apprenctice be able to save out collada or fbx?
Apprentice HD will still not export to those formats. Collada out is not a part of H12 and FBX out remains a commercial feature.

rmagee,
Can you please give some clarification by stating what scenario(s) below is/are valid:
A. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. They are automatically moved to the H12 HD license that is annual and the H11 HD license that was perpetual ceases.
B. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They also receive an H12 HD license that is annual and will expire on the anniversary date of purchase unless renewed.
C. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They have an option to move their H11 HD to the H12 HD annual license, the H11 HD license ceases to exist.
D. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They have an option to purchase a H12 HD annual license for an additional cost of $99.
It sounds like your comments are in line with scenario A or D. but I'm not certain of whether the “you” in your comment to BradASchreiber was in relation to him, ie. those that purchased prior to 90 days or to those that purchased within the 90 days….so I am not clear on what specifically will happen.
If you purchase within 90 days then you will be sent an upgrade from H11 HD to H12 HD - if you accept this then your perpetual license will be replaced with one that expires one year from your original date of purchase. At this point you can
A) Install the H12 upgrade and give up your perpetual H11 license.
B) Ignore the upgrade and continue using H11 HD. You can then purchase a new H12 HD license if you desire or simply use the free H12 Apprentice to explore the new features.

Actually, you will not lose your H11 Apprentice HD license. What it means is that there is no “upgrade” path from that license to the H12 Annual HD license. The people within the 90 days will be giving up their H11 license when they move to the new annual license but you will be able to keep the H11 license then add a H12 annual license if you choose.
To get H12 you would join the program for $99 at whatever time seems appropriate to you. In the old system you would have paid $69 to upgrade while now the cost will be $99 - and any upgrade which occurs in the next year would be included in that price.
It is the idea of asking someone who bought 91 days before a release to pay the same upgrade fee as someone who bought 500 days before that prompted the idea of an annual license with automatic upgrades. It makes sure that everyone always has access to the latest version which is important for skill-building within the community.

One of the key goals of the Apprentice Program has always been to provide a way for the community to keep their Houdini skills up-to-date. In order to ensure that everyone using Apprentice HD has access to the latest release, the HD program will be moving to an annual license. This new Apprentice HD license will cost $99, include all major and minor upgrades and can be renewed annually.
Anyone who purchased Apprentice HD up to 90 days before the release date will be sent a Houdini 12 license which will expire on the anniversary of its original purchase. All other Apprentice HD customers will need to pay the $99 annual fee to join the program. If you choose not to renew then you can continue to work with a free Apprentice license and can rejoin the HD program at any time.
Houdini 12 is going to be an exciting release with a wealth of features and performance enhancements which make it significantly faster and more memory efficient. With a new geometry engine, targeted optimizations to dynamics and rendering, and viewport enhancements, you will be able to accomplish more and iterate faster. This new version also includes Bullet solver integration, Pyro FX 2, production-ready cloth, Alembic exporter and much more.
As soon as Houdini 12 goes gold, details about joining the new Apprentice HD program will be posted. This is a ground-breaking release and everyone is going to want to be on board.

Check out the new banner on the website. Getting closer….;-)
As we mentioned before, the final release will be dependent on when the new features are production ready - there will not be an open beta but as soon as the software is ready then it will be released to the wider community.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It is my intention to do more lessons this year.
I generally create the text-based PDF versions first then use these to record the videos. At the top of each tutorial is a “Download Chapter” link to get the PDF file. The idea was to have a PDF for people who like to read and check off steps as they do them and videos for people who have to see the steps in action.
Is everyone finding the PDF versions? I have had hints in the past that people are jumping to the videos and not using them in tandem with the text-based chapters?

I wonder how long it takes them to do it, as they seem pretty planned. I could hear the sound of pages from the video, so they seem to be following a detailed plan through the video which is very cool.

Rather than using those hotkeys, you may prefer setting up four views then using spacebar-b to bring them up and minimize them as needed. This way the camera view and any background images remain intact.

Thanks for all the ideas proposed in this forum. While I don't have anything to share at this point, I wanted to acknowledge that the suggestions are being read and will help us make future plans.
One comment often brought up is “why learn houdini if I can't afford the software when I go pro.” Something to consider is that Houdini gives you a good understanding of what is going on under the hood in CG - things that other programs protect you from. That in-depth knowledge will be beneficial no matter which 3D app you end up using down the line.
Thanks for your interest,
Robert

Can you share please, who did a car animation?
The idea with car is great, but vehicle animation is…
Sorry once again, and please understand me - I just trying to push your greatest CG package higher.
The teaser was an intern project used to help us test features in Houdini 12. It was created in about a month with two main artists supported by a couple others during the final crunch.
The car animation is in some cases procedural using a special digital asset - A curve is set up and the car reacts as naturally as possible based on its motion path. In other cases it was animated by hand. The animation could definitely go through a few more iterations to anchor it to the ground better.
Thanks for the feedback. These exercises help us better understand production issues, we know that our customers are pushing things artisticly on a daily basis which is what makes us the proudest.

Select the character node - In the Parameter pane, RMB-click on the icon at the top left and choose Delete Channels from the menu. this will delete all the channels from the node.
If you have multiple object selected then only the first one will have its channels removed - you need to do this one node at a time.

Actually the purple flag in the template slot means that the template is selectable. This way you can use the templated geometry to make selection and apply operations. By default templates are only for visual reference and for snapping. You get this by Ctrl -clicking on the template flag.
The render flag is also a violet color but is on the display flag. It can be created by Ctrl-clicking on the display flag and it works as mentioned above.

Attached is a network with several cookies which are then merged and fused then interior edges are removed to give you your outline. This is a working solution to this particular problem (three overlapping shapes) - as you add more and more shapes, this solution would become unwieldy…
Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Shader export variables in Houdini 11
- rmagee

There are new exports found in the Mantra Surface material. When you put down a mantra ROP, you can go to the Properties > Output tab and click on the + sign next to Extra Image Planes. Click on the grey arrow next to VEX Variable and you will see a list of the variables that are available. Some of these are globals such as Alpha, Opacity and Position.
The rest are exported parameters from inside the Mantra surface. You can see there are options for diffuse, specular etc and you can either work with indirect and direct lights separately or combine them. You can also use the per light option to separate out the contributions of different lights. This is an important capability found in the new surface model vop and the Mantra surface material which is harder to do with completely custom shaders.
One thing to note is that there is no separate paint option. It is rendered as part of the diffuse channel. These exports are created when you render therefore no extra time is taken to generate them. You can also use takes to create separate passes for paint and shadows but these will be rendered separately.
