Open the door to powerful procedural workflows with Houdini Engine for UE4. Houdini’s node-based workflow makes it easy to publish networks of nodes as shareable Houdini Digital Assets. With the Houdini Engine, these assets can be loaded into the Unreal Editor with procedural controls available to artists.

These controls can be used to customize the look of the asset while the Houdini Engine works under the hood to "cook" the node networks and push the results back to UE4. This allows for deep integration of Houdini Digital Assets into an your game development pipeline. While not a runtime solution, Houdini Engine for UE4 provides a procedural content creation solution that makes it possible to build bigger worlds with more detail while working more efficiently.

1. Download and Install UE4 Plug-in | 30 day trial

o access the Houdini Engine for UE4, download the latest Houdini installer [build 15.0.313 or higher] which includes the UE4 plug-in. While the plug-in connects Unreal Engine to the Engine, a full Houdini install is needed to cook the results under the surface. The following video demonstrates how to install the Houdini Engine and how to acquire a 30 day Houdini Engine Trial license:

2. Take the Tour | HDA Sampler

Once you have the Houdini Engine for Ue4 plug-in up and running, you can open up the Houdini Digital Asset Sampler and explore a gallery of asset-based game art. Learn how you can manipulate each asset in UE4 then conduct in-editor testing to evaluate the results.

3. Work Inside UE4 | Ivy Asset

This demonstration shows a Houdini Digital Asset that uses strokes painted onto geometry in UE4 and uses them to grow ivy. This asset shows how a highly detailed result built using instancing is easily achievable using Houdini Engine for UE4.

4. Create your Own Asset in Houdini

In this lesson, you will learn how to create a procedural asset in Houdini then publish it for use in UE4. You will also learn how to promote parameters to build a UI for the asset which show up in the Details panel in the Unreal Editor. This lesson will help you get comfortable working back and forth between Houdini and UE4.

5. Get more Assets

To access a library of existing Digital Assets, visit the Orbolt Smart 3D Asset store which has a growing library assets for use in Houdini Engine for UE4. You can also sign up as an author and sell your procedural assets to other artists.
