If you see the web page, then that means that Houdini was able to get to a point where it spawned a daemon process called ‘cloudsubmit’ which is responsible for starting EC2 instances and managing render jobs on the cloud.

So if the EC2 dashboard reports 0 instances, then the cloudsubmit daemon must have hit a glitch when trying to start the instances. This can happen for a variety of reasons such as a network firewall configuration setting or if the EC2 Amazon account that you are using is not subscribed to the Houdini Cloud Rendering service.

To find out what the problem is, we need to examine cloudsubmit's log file. On Mac OSX, the log file is stored in a temporary directory somewhere under /var/folders.

Open a Terminal.app, and run this command to find the log file:

find /var/folders -name “cloudsubmit.log”


Once you locate the log file, you can post it here or send it to me by email and I can help you from there.

Hi Rob - hope you can help me too.
I never get the page that says my file is uploading. Absolutely nothing happens when I submit. (Pre-flight and all the other steps work fine.)

I have set up a linux instance and it's running but I can't seem to get my HD Apprentice file to talk to it.

When I hit HQ cloud render I am prompted to preflight my scene and then I submit it but nothing happens - I don't even get the “Launching a computer in the cloud” page.

I'm not very computer savvy so I would really appreciate some step by step instructions. There are no mac platform instances avaliable so perhaps I'm doing this wrong right from the start.

I have caustics working great but the alpha is unusable because the table geo that is catching the caustics is also in the alpha. If I phantom the table there is nothing to catch the caustics so they don't work.

I've tried using shadow matt but it doesn't work with caustics.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for any assistance.

I'm not good at building my own shaders (I'm still a beginner) so if that's what I need to do please explain how.
