Newbie trouble with volume smoke *.sim files June 29, 2010, 1:20 p.m.

Yes, it does in fact render – there's no camera in the posted file, but it adds a default one. I'm not sure if that's relevant though.

Are sim files on fluids somehow disabled in Apprentice perhaps? When I attempt to use the other file output mechanism (*.bgeo) described in the tutorial, ROP Output, I get a permission error, which strongly suggests to me that Apprentice just doesn't allow this.

If so, that's fine and all, I just wish the Apprentice docs would mention this so that I didn't sink a lot of time into getting something to work that's disabled.

Newbie trouble with volume smoke *.sim files June 28, 2010, 2:45 p.m.

Hello,

I am a brand new user for Houdini Apprentice, and I am having trouble getting a volume smoke simulation to cache to *.sim files. I followed the tutorial “03 Smoke from Object” from the “Introduction to Fluid Dynamics in Houdini” module, and everything seems to work except for the *.sim file writes.

I've tried various paths and basically every option combination that the File DOP appears to allow, but no luck. Even stranger, I tried the “CacheToDisk” example provided with the documentation, and the rigid body simulation writes files out just fine. But, when I transfer the exact same path and settings to my smoke scene, it still does not work.

Is there something special I need to be doing in order to get volume smoke *.sim files to write out? Have I maybe hooked up the File DOP incorrectly? I am running on OSX 10.5.8, and my Apprentice version is 10.0.401. I have also tried on OSX 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) with Apprentice 10.0.595, and still no luck.

Any advice would be appreciated. The simple *.hipnc I generated from the tutorial is attached.

Thanks,
TK
