ok, ive figured out a solution for this:

set the ROP_Alembic_Output to HDF5
export entire frame range
load in via Alembic Scene (rather than via a File Node)
set file path to alembicCachePath_1.abc

its seems a bit more convoluted than i would imagine it should be, but it works

I tried to do what you mentioned and at first it seemed to work, the whole animation sequence wrote out fully on export. However, when i brought back in the alembic sequence, the objects were there but the animation was missing…

Im not sure exactly how to do this yet, but essentially you have to use the pivot attribute to re-center the geometry before baking….
