I've found this post and it fixed my issues (turned out double-shift to change keyboard language layout on Linux is a no-no)

With Ubuntu 10.04 I'm getting strange problems whereby houdini 11 suddenly starts to behave as though I have my shift button down (opens channel editor when I click on a text field, adds to selection instead of replacing selection etc.). Does anyone else have this?

Same here. This is from the cmivfx fluidfx tutorial right? Might it be because the instructor used Houdini ~9.0?
