I have just installed Houdini FX 12.5 but I cant find any of the FX tabs on the shelf. ie Particles, Rigid body, Fluids etc I only have light and cameras Fur.

Are they hidden and need enabling?

Shot in the dark: maybe you're running houdini when you should be running houdini fx.

Well it says Houdini FX on the icon, splash screen and toolbar. but it is definetly only Houdini without the FX. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing but I still get the same!

If the missing effects nodes are still available in the dynamic tab menu, then maybe your default desktop arrangement is corrupt or incomplete. Try switching to a different configuration like Model or Technical.
