polyBevel weirdness

Hi guys, I'm just starting to learn the basics of Houdini and I thought I'd start with the Quickstart tutorial on the SideFX website. I am following the steps exactly trying to build a Greek column from a cube. There is a bunch of edges that get a relative polyBevel and then some more edges after that get an absolute polyBevel.

Now here's where the problem happens, when I try to increase the repetitions of the second polyBevel I get corner edges extending right through the entire model and sticking out the opposite side like spikes. See attached images.

I have watched the steps in the tutorial several time and tried to replicate the steps, but each time I get the spikey edges.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and is it something I'm doing wrong?

Hi,
Try using a simple cube to practice on. See attached. You want to practice edge section < RMB , select loop or partial loop .

Hey circusmonkey, I opened the file you sent me and it looks similar to the cube I was working on. Why does that spikey corner thing happen? I'm used to using Maya and bevels are no problem in Maya what-so-ever.

I followed the tutorial to a T and kept getting the weird corner spikes. If I knew what the problem was I could probably avoid it in the future.

Hi,
Well clearly you haven't followed the instructions to a T . . I have no idea what your doing to get that shape. So I would be stepping back in my Houdini scene tree and working out which step you followed incorrectly. Practice on a cube until you get the hang of things

Ok I tried just getting a basic cube, then I selected all edges and I applied a polyBevel with ‘high density round’ and in absolute mode. The same thing happens (see attached). Is it possible that something in the preferences is set incorrectly?

Hi,
Unlikely. Download the latest build for what ever platform you are using and again practice on a cube

that sample scene you sent me also had the spikey corner issue happening. How did you make that happen?

so I just updated to the latest build 12.5.376 and it's still giving the same issue when using polyBevel. The result looks slightly different but it's still f'd up.

you have just updated to the latest Production build but as you can see that is 12.5.376

and the bug was fixed in 12.5.383 which is later so obviously you are still experiencing the bug

update to the latest build 12.5.389 or at least 383 to get rid of that
