Play with the new spray paint SOP…too much fun.

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini14.0/nodes/sop/spraypaint [sidefx.com]

When I try to use the spray paint shelf tool on any geometry it always errors out and doesn't paint any points, what are the exact steps to make it work?

not sure why you are getting errors.
I place a grid, jump inside the node and ad a mountain SOP (just to test). With this selected I can use the shelf tool (or connect it myself) and paint away…no problem.
Once I am happy with my points, I can connect any other geometry(lsystem) as second input and untick the “visualize spheres” option.
Instant forest creation without any geometry placement overlap.

I see that the 3 OS X version options on the download section are giving the same file (10.9), is it normal ?
Is there a 10.10 archive ?
There are only 6 unique builds at the moment:
  • Windows 64-bit (VS2012)
  • Windows 32-bit (VS2012) (hopefully will be dropped in 15)
  • Mac OS (Clang 5.1)
  • Linux (GCC 4.8)
  • Linux (GCC 4.6) (hopefully will be dropped in 15)
  • Linux (GCC 4.4) (hopefully will be dropped in 15)

The multiple entries pointing to the same file are just so that it's explicitly spelled out what platforms are supported and what version to get for what platform, especially for the Linux platforms.

*whew* There is also a known issue that if no geometry is selected, it will let you paint into the nothingness, but show up as errored out, because there's no input.

In that case, if you connect an input afterward, it'll generate points on that geometry as if you had always had that input connected. Same for if you change the input to a different model, so that you can work with lower resolution geometry to paint and then switch it out for higher resolution geometry when you want the real thing. You should get approximately the same points, except in a few edge cases.

Can anyone tell me what the lazer select actualy does? How is this different from the “select visible geometry only” option?

It's basically a macro for Paint selection + 0 pixel radius + Area Selection Visible Geometry Only, so you don't have to continually change those settings. You could do the same thing in H13, except with a bit more hassle.

Congratulations on the new release(i know, i am late)! It's a fantastic, solid release. Also thank you for changing icons into Motion View. I am sure it's a coincidence, but i received at least 3 of my major requests included into this release(some major rework on UV's and animation layers are THE best possible features). I am ramping up my learning so i can go into full production, but this year i am purchasing. I will start with Indie in 1-2 months and then i hope i can go full license as soon as possible.

Now I'm trying to think of which word I originally typed, which was conveniently changed (by the forum software?) to “delicious spam”…

Weird.

Thx for the build info.

Where the hell can I find the /tmp folder on a mac ? Even by searching in invisible system files I can't find it anywhere, same for the crash files.

Houdini displays a nice and clear message “data saved to /tmp/crash.untitled.pasto_400.hip”

but I just can't find it.

Many thx, sorry if it is obvious.

Perfect - that's the file.

In the Finder, ‘Go’ menu, ‘Go to Folder…’ then type “/tmp/” without the "

Here is the crashlog file, thx a lot.

It was a simple attribute set up, but it crashes with very simple set ups like this.

Here it is, pretty much nothing in it of course, it is really erratic, I just linked those 3 nodes and crashed. It happened with all sort of nodes, divide, polywire, wireframe, attrib transfer, attrib create…

That crashed .hip file is empty. If you can create the crashes again but save the file before it crashes, then upload that one. Thanks!

Sorry for all the crazy steps! Bugs need to be exactly pinned down

That crashlog looks like the one that has been attached to some other crash reports that aren't reproduceable. It's happening during font rendering.

ok, here is another one, the crash file is still empty but the scene was just a simple attribute transfer in P, then I just added a divide and crashed.

I added the scene (it worked perfectly when I re-opened it.)

thx a lot.
