I got this error, windows 10 64bit on a machine that meets requirements easily and yet I got that error.

Hello, do I need to contact tech support for this, or what ?

So far my opinion of Houdini is dropping by the second.

Yeah I would definitely say contact tech support and reserve any judgment about Houdini until then.

Changed machine name to something without hyphen, still no luck .
I'll try tech support I guess, may have to wait till Monday.

Alright I got it working, uninstalled , tried again and so far so good, though its clear Houdini is vastly unlike any other modeler I"ve tried as I get crashes doing the most simple thing, maybe it doesn't like my hardware/os ha

I've modeled and sculpted for a longtime, but I can't load my obj file, doesn't show up in viewport, what do I need to do. Watching first tut, but all its doing is creating primitives.

Going through tuts , going to be a long day I think

Glad you got it up and running anyway. I have not done any modeling in Houdini so no help there.

But I do know it is sensitive to hardware in different ways than any other app I have installed on this machine. I had to update my graphics driver just to see shaded mode.

Additionally Houdini complained that that particular driver had known issues and causes crashes. lol well. OK. So it looks like I may have to install on another machine.

Maybe your issues are related to graphics card. Just a thought.
