Smooth cloth simulation in H 15.5 impossible?

Is it possible that the finite element solver has massive problems with cloth?

I'm trying to recreate a simple curtain like this (made in 12.5):

But the “vertical lines” have always a “zickzack” alignment in H15.5,
not a smooth cloth like vertical alignment.
Any help is welcome :-)

Well, I don't think, FEM isn't capable of doing such a simple sim. You have to play with the settings till you get the result you want. Increasing substepping also improves the quality a lot.

I attached a screenshot with a few settings as a starting point. Decrease the overall stiffness considerably. To counter act that increase the the relative stiffness in the stretching parameter a lot. Otherwhise you get a lot of…well…stretching. So this way the cloth is smooth but not stretchy. Just keep playing till you get your look.

Hi Rosko,

many thanks for having a closer look :-)

I my opinion (I've learned ladies' tailor, really, no joke)
the FEM simulated results are not looking like cloth in this sim.
If I like to get thick velvet or taffeta like cloth sim for a curtain,
no chance….
If you have a look at your example, the shear is much to strong

Attached is a v14 sim result, have a look at the wireframe there.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble finding the right settings.

Here are some tips:

If the shear force is too strong (not much shearing deformation going on), then you can lower the value for Relative Stiffness in the “Shear” column. While keeping the stiffness value in the “Stretch” column at 1, you may reduce the shear to something like 0.1.

If the cloth doesn't look thick enough for your taste, you may want to change to the “Strong Bend” model. For example, you can put a zero in the Weak Bend column and put 0.001 in the Strong Bend column. The more you increase this value, the thicker the cloth will look. (But keep the values small compared to Stretch and Shear).

If its doesn't work out please log it at support - the more bugs that are logged, the more time the devs will allocate to it… hopefully in H16+….

Hi Rosko,
many thanks for trying and helping :-)
It's not the best answer that you are frustrated, too :-(

But maybe we found a “missing feature”.

I'll follow Artye and will write a Bug report.
