OK, just trying to check out the apprentice:

1) errors on installing no-commercial license:

Server no64: Access denied for this operation
ERROR: Key installation failed for no64

2) diagnostics show this error:

License Administrator output:
=============================
Generated on: Sun Feb 05 08:34:09 2006
Local host name: no64
Local server code: 4f0019c7
Local ip address: 192.168.0.100
Number of servers: 1
License server name: no64 (no64)
License server server code: 4f0019c7
Server ip address: 192.168.0.100
License server is running: Yes
May read licenses from server: Yes
Has SERVER license: No
License server version: 8.0.474
May modify server from this machine: No (no license file permissions)
Redundant server keys: 0

NO idea on WHAT needs permissions set and WHY. What is the cause of this message?

3) NO envionment variables are set - I looked for ‘houdini_path’ and NOTHING was set by the installer - there's some info on setting up Linux, but nothing about manually setting env. in windows!

WHAT vars need to be set? Is this causing the permissions problem?

Seems this thing is impossible to setup on Windows - can somebody please help me?

Tried this:

“If you are not able to run the License Administrator, please install each key by running sesictrl -I <key>.”

Error is ‘ACCESS DENIED’

Can't manually enter (previous post), can't get command prompt to work and there is NO information on how to address these problems.

Please help!

Try doing this as root. I guess you should also make sure you started sesinetd with enough permissions to modify the /usr/lib/sesi/licenses file.

This is in Windows so none of the linux help applies or is easily translated in ‘window-ese’ - I'm doing this with admin priveleges in winXP!

Just to be sure, could you try the latest daily build?

yeah, tomorrow after the game.

seriously, do ANY of my questions above have any relevance to the issues or not? i think YES, but there is NO information for windows anywhere I can find (and yes, I searched here and other houdini forums…)

i think there is something fundamentally wrong with SOMETHING i mention above (permissions, no env vars set, etc.) that will NOT be solved in a simple newer build. i'm using the latest ‘production’ build as you can already see,,,

about to drop the whole thing…

You're running 8.0.474 which is the latest *production* build. It is by no means the latest build. The latest build can be found in the Daily Builds section of the download page.

Is your Windows installation directory different from the default? ie. is it in C:\Windows? This is important because the license file to which the license installer needs it stored in the keys subdirectory of where you installed windows. It also of course needs file write permission in order to do so.

Another thing that is useful for others in helping is to provide the full diagnostic info found when you launch the License Administrator (via the Start Menu). Choose View > Diagnostic Information from the top menu. Save it to a text file, and post it here.

Check in your C:\Windows\keys directory. You should have 4 files in there:
license.auth
license.dat
licenses
licenses.disabled

Are you able to read the text file, licenses?

FINALLY!!! I had to manually create the ‘keys’ directory since there was NO directory created by the installer and then I just copy/pasted my codes into a text file then renamed to ‘licenses’ with no extension and it worked!! It was failing the license install because there was NO directory or file to install into!!

Pretty strange that this directory was NOT created - maybe an installer bug?

Thanks for bearing with me thru this - I was at my wits end!!

Did the install process go smoothly for you? No error messages or anything during the install?

Not a single error! I even thought I DID screw something up so I restored my system with trueimage and redid the install - same result, no errors, but NO folder created! Very very strange! I run a pretty boilerplate system - ya know, I've NEVER had a problem with any other installs, but I do run both NOD32 antivirus and spyware doctor - I'm wondering if there's a conflict - I'll check the logs of these programs and let you know….

EDIT: NOTHING in the logs!
