Can I author variants in Houdini?

I see the option on the USD ROP , but I dont know how to define the variants to Houdini, so that the USD ROP will create them.

Mainly interested in storing variants for Instancing workflows.

Looking at the source, it looks like this isn't entirely hooked up on the backend.
