In the uploaded setup I've created two spheres. As they get close to each other they trigger some audio from Chops. I've annotated my file a little bit to clarify what I've done. As you'll see it's somewhat convoluted.

Any thoughts on a more elegant approach would be greatly appreciated.

I think you can import points directly to CHOPS, use MathCHOP set to CombineCHOPs=>Length, to get distance between points, and then trigger sound based on this data.

I think that you could also get those two points together in one CHOP as static and when you delete ty* and tz* channels, you will have two keys, and you can then check when they have equal position, then generate sound.

its impossible to find tutorials on this subject of triggering audio from geo attributes. Any known sources?
