I just downloaded apprentice and it locked up the Suse box! I really wanted a OS X version - after reading the OS X ports and reading
whats best and seeing that people love blender even on a Houdini forum. Blender runs it runs and anything and doesnt cost thousands of dollars why would any use this Houdini stuff?
So much for my Houdini trial.
Ed
forget houdini and blender all the way

Hi Ed,
I think you might be out of luck with the graphics card you have. I don't remember if the GeForce2 MX will work with Houdini. Please search through the forum if you can. I'll try to see what I can dig up too.
If the card is good, please install the Nvidia drivers for the card as the open source ‘nv’ drivers does not have proper OpenGL support. This is most likely the reason why launching Houdini killed your X session.
Please let us know how it goes.
Cheers!

Well that's what I dont get, whats the big deal with how old the video card is. Blender runs fine on that machine and it uses OpenGL too. I can understand skipping the standard API and using special drivers for speed
but ther eshould be a fall-back to allow it to run slower using some other older API. I have a windows machine that is 600mhz, so talk about slow I might try that too.
Thanks…

OK I installed the Nvidia driver
1.0-9629 for Linux x86
and 3D seems disabled but NVIDIA says ignore that in SuSE 9.0
I should have OpenGL supprt 2.1 running
The problem is the License server wont serve licences
is ths a firewall problem?
Any ideas anyone ???

Hi Ed,
To get sesinetd running, please do the following, probably as root:
cd /usr/lib/sesi
./sesinetd.startup start
After sesinetd starts, you should be able to install an Apprentice license.
To ensure that sesinetd starts everytime, you have to login as root, go to yast->System->System Services (Runlevel) and find sesinetd.startup there and enable it in runlevel 2, 3 and 5. This is taken from this thread [sidefx.com].
Please let us know how it goes.
Cheers!

I ran Houdini 6-7.1 successfully under Linux Mandrake 10.1 with nVidia MX400 card with OGL enabled for about 3 years. Now I have an up-to-date system with SuSe 10 x86_64 OS - it runs fine.
Concerning sesinetd not starting - I guess this is a common problem with SuSe distros - no big problem with that - you can always create a shell file to start houdini, initializing the needed variables and starting sesinetd for you. Or start it up manually after you run source houdini_init in csh.
Cheers, and don't give up too soon.
