Is there a way to get the opengl view in houdini to use the “default lights” instead of lights in the scene? If I add a couple lights, I find the viewport slows way down. The only way to get it to full speed is to delete the lights. Also, I tried lowering the dimmer to 0 but that just makes the view black. Any suggestions?

Only through a hotkey (initially unbound).

Settings > Hotkeys…

You'll find it as:
/Houdini/Panes/Geometry Viewers/Toggle Headlight/Object Lights lighting

This was an exceptional case, as far as I know, and will be exposed in 9.0.
