Karma CPU & XPU: Displacement and Bump not working. At all.

I am on Houdini 19.5.569 (Py3.9).

I literally tried everything I could find on the web.

Nothing in terms of displacement is working.
Bump neither.

The "Houdini Foundations" tutorial for example - "Destruction FX" - when it comes to shading in pt. 10.
Nothing is working in the displacement dept. and it is unbelievably frustrating.

It even works fine in BLENDER. Come on!

Also, none of the noise generators is working.

PLEASE help, I usually am good at web research, but all I could find did nothing for me.

THANK YOU.

I shortly managed to get it to work in the "exploding bomb" tutorial - in CPU mode.

Though I don't understand why.

It started working after bringing in the "render geometry settings" node created by PYRO.

If it stopped working again, just dropping a "render settings" node right after the inital reference node made it work again.
I could just delete it after the fact.

What IS this??

Why do I have the best tool in the world, and such a simple thing as displacement / bump is not working, not even in CPU mode?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post a screenshot, or preferably your scene. Without them, we have no way of knowing what might be going wrong.
Also, post a link to the tutorial you are following.

Very true.

Will gather all of it.

I just added a sphere to the tutorial scene.
In this tutorial:

https://www.sidefx.com/tutorials/smashing-wine-glass/ [www.sidefx.com]

It sometimes worked after PYRO created the render settings via Quick Setup in this tutorial:

https://www.sidefx.com/tutorials/foundations-destruction-fx/ [www.sidefx.com]

It just worked when I took the second screenshot, so I attached that scene file as well.

What I get always looks like this, a checkered triangle something on the object (see screenshot).

Thank you SO much for looking into this.

It may have been something in my render settings, but now it works better somehow.

Only ONE thing left.

Depending on the angles of camera and lighting - the geometry of the sphere is shining through in the render.

See attached file.

Any ideas on how to avoid this?

Thank you so much, everyone!

It looks a little different / better in Karma CPU.

So maybe that's XPU-specific?

"Render as subdivision" did it.

Thank you so much.

For anyone following, you can find the setting here:

SOPs - obj level - Render - Display As - Subdivision Surface / Curves

LOPs - (SOP Import) - Geometry Handling - Treat Polygons as Subdivision Surfaces
