Blending materials

Hi, I was wondering if there is an easy way to blend materials on an object in H9? If a take a sphere and create a group on each side then add a different material to each group can I smooth the transition between the materials so it is not just a direct break between them? I am looking for something simpler than unwrapping the obj and painting a texture.
Any ideas?

if you're happy to play with VOPs then create a shader with two texture maps and use a point attribute or greyscale image to act as a blend using the mix VOP.

Thanks, it worked great! Here is what I am working on. It is for the 10 sec animation contest at 3DBUZZ. It still needs some tweaking but on the right track.
