Guides are optional for the Fur SOP in Houdini 9.1. When guides are not provided, hairs are generated out from the skin in the normal (“N” attribute) direction. The length of the hairs is specified by a parameter on the Fur SOP.

The Fur SOP will also use a “rest” attribute on the skin geometry (if present) when distributing hairs on the surface. This attribute gives you the freedom to animate the skin (as it affects hair placement when there are no guides) while keeping the distribution of hairs on all frames consistent.

Hi Derrick! Thanks for the answer. Shame on me, I forgot about this attribute. I already make custom guides and then pass point translation to fur guides by pclouds
