presumably, you crush up Silicon or limestone (depending on desired effect) for an extended period of time.

Allow it to erode, and expose to environmental conditions for several million years.

At what distance are you looking at it? What behaviour do you need? For sand, there would be several techniques, which vary according to the needs of your shot(s).

Do you have example images, and storyboards?

I've seen an excelent sand simulation made by Miguel Perez Senent, he used rigid bodies and particles for what i see, there is also a Sand node but i dont try it yet.
