I've had no problem installing and running Houdini, of any vintage, on Ubuntu Dapper (6.06). There has been the odd glitch with nvidia drivers, but that's common on any linux and fairly easy to resolve.
Not sure why you would have any problems with it on Fedora. It's a pretty straight forward command line process. Are you getting any errors while installing. You are installing the license server, right?
Where are you installing to? I install each version to /opt .
Can you run hkey on a command line and gives us that info.?
Looks like hserver is running,(you can confirm that with ps -e ), it just doesn't like you localhost setup.

hi guys,
am very new to linux. so need help with installing houdini apprentice version on fedora 10 which i installed on my pc couple of days back.
i downloaded the apprentice version (7z format) and unzipped it into a folder. then i open terminal and type ‘su’ and then password. after that i went into the folder where i unzipped the file and ran ‘houdini.install’. but nothing happens.
can someone help me out by explaining the proper procedure for installing it.
thnx in advance

If you've unzipped the files someplace in your home directory you won't need to use “su”.
That however shouldn't have any bearing on running the installer.
Check to make sure the downloaded file is the right size, perhaps it didn't fully download.
Did you get the correct version for your OS? Is it 32 bit or 64 bit ?

Sounds like you got the wrong build since I don't see any correct builds offered in 7z format.
For 64 bit Fedora 10 you need to download the build listed as “Debian 64-bit Linux (lenny)*” x86_64 gcc4.2
If you have 32 bit Fedora 10 you need “Ubuntu Linux 7.04*” i686 gcc4.1
It's not important which distro is listed, but the version of GCC that is nearest to yours. Fedora 10 uses gcc 4.3
As for installation, you may receive a bunch of messages regarding sesinetd and libz.so.1 not having any version information. From my experience you can safely ignore these. Houdini will run fine.

thnk u guys for ur speedy response
.
yes it seemed to be a corrupt download. so downloaded again.
i downloaded ‘ Red Hat Linux Fedora Core 4 ’ version of Houdini Apprentice.
somehow i managed to install it and installed all the missing lib* files. now when i run hkey it gives me error msg ‘OpenGL shader extensions not available’ and closes a small window. donno what it is.
and if i run houdini i get some msg saying ‘command not found’.
sometimes it says no ‘license found on localhost’ even though i installed the license.

A couple of things to check next: do you have an fancy desktop windowing effects running? Turn those off.
Check that you have the latest version of python installed. It's not strictly necessary, but it is the easiest means of sorting out some problems.
Houdini is strongly attached to python now, particularly the interface.

Fedora 10 comes with Python 2.5, so you're all set.
rpm fusion drivers should be fine. Just google it and plenty of walk-through's should come up. With these drivers you get a few benefits. All external software dependencies are handled for you since it's an RPM, and you won't have to manually re-install the driver after a major system update.
The drivers from nvidia's site are the most up to date though, so they're a good option if you have any trouble with the one's from rpm fusion's repository. They also work very well.
good luck

one more thing i forgot to ask. i'm dual booting and in windows i've set my desktop to 1280x960. when i try to do the same in fedora, the max i get is 1024x768 with 55Hz refresh rate.
b4 installing nvidia drivers my refresh rate was around 60 or 70 i think. how can i go for bigger resolution or is fedora limited to 1024.
i've got nvidia 8600 GT. and 17" monitor.
