Hi there,
Apologies for bothering you guys but I'm new to Houdini and I'm in the process of putting together a new PC with the main purpose of running Houdini Apprentice HD. I'd initially settled on a build based on Vista 64, Core i7, and an Nvidia 9800GT GC. However, after browsing this forum it seems that Houdini can potentially have problems with Nvidia 9* cards and Vista 64. Is this the case?

Could anyone please let me know if they are running the latest version of Houdini with the 9800 (or 9* series or later Nvidia GC) on Vista 64?

If this is a no go, will the same problems be evident with 64 bit Ubuntu (or other Linux) and these graphics cards? I haven't yet bought Vista 64 (or the rest of the kit) so I'm open to suggestions! (The Quadro cards are out of my range however) I am keen to stay with 64 bit if possible to make use of 6GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There were reports of problems concerning the drivers actually (afaik the versions 180.xx *might* mean trouble).
However, the issue is worked on by SESI so I suppose soon it'll be fixed.

I have a lic for Houdini on my laptop as well. Running Vista Ultimate 64 and 9800M GTX Q9550 Intel chip. No problems, but I only use it when remote or traveling. But have seen no major problems.

Need to add just noticed you have not bought Vista yet. I was told to buy Vista Ultimate was there were less problems with it.. Why I don't know but I took the advice..

Thanks for the advice guys! I actually just purchased the Nvidia GTS250 GC instead of the 9800 as it seemed a better deal. Now I've just to decide whether or not to go the extra outlay for Vista Ultimate rather than Premium …

Not much difference between the two other than Ultimate has some business like features you would probably never use.

I was told it was more “stable” but with recent patches to premium, I am not sure that would hold true now…

Good luck in that area

You might save the $100 or so dollars and spluge on something else
