I previewed my render with mplay on OSX. I exported the mov file from it and it is very rough.
How to setup the export compress parameters with the mov export from mplayer on OSX? I remember there would pop up the parameters to tweak on windows.

Hello there,
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the best way i've figured out how to get “prettier” exports of .mov files from houdini is by using the command line script: mcp: you can find details here about it: http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini9.1/ref/utils/mcp [sidefx.com]
it took me a bit to figure out, so here is an example i keep lying around:
mcp -v -f 1 230 jg_vopsop_foamparts_06.comp_01.\$F4.tif -o jg_vopssop_foamparts_06.comp_01.mov
make note of the \ before the $F4… i wasn't able to get it to work until I put that there, because in the SHELL, $ is reserved, and you need to escape that so that MCP can recognize $F4 correctly. Hope that helps,
Cheers,
Jonathan
