Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Strange particle normal orientation

So, i've spent the last three hours trying to figure this out.
I have a very simple particle system with particles being birthed from a circle and then I copy disk like spheres to each particle.
The problem is that I can't get the disks to be copied with the proper orientation. The strange thing is that on particles birthed to the left the orientation seems fine and the particles on the right seem to get twisted.
I've tried EVERYTHING within my limited knowledge. Even animating the rotation of the source circle along the Y axis seems to affect the “twisting”.
here's a screen grab so you can see what i'm talking about.
this seems so simple. I'm sure there is something real stupid i'm missing.

mk

I'm having that same problem.
What system are you using? I'm on a Quad MacPro, XP, H 9.0.794.
It seems this is a windows thing. I did find some interesting info here:
http://www.boinc-wiki.info/index.php?title=Unrecoverable_error_for_result_%27%28result%29%27_%28_-_exit_code_-1073741819_%280xc0000005%29%29#Exit_Code_-1073741819_.280xc0000005.29.29 [boinc-wiki.info]
Although I have no idea what Boinc is…

Hi,
What's the way to control atmosphere falloff these days? I remember it used to be as simple as placing geometry inside an atmosphere object to define it's bounds.
Thanks!

The Radeon 600x has a huge memory leak problem with houdini under XP that causes your ram to fill up as the interface redraws (during playback) and crash houdini once you run out of memory. That was probably what was crashing your houdini several times a day. Odforce has this documented on their wiki.
Forcing ogl software rendering with HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE = 1 solves the problem but makes everything run painfully slow. Turning Double buffer off also stops the memory leak but you get anoying refresh lines.
You are saying that this fancy named version of the catalyst driver resolves the memory leak problem? If you press play on houdini dosen't your memory usage rise slowly but shurely?
This sounds too good to be true!

say away from ATI, especially Radeon cards which have a pathetic memory leak problem with Houdini under XP.
Nvidia Quadro something is usually nice.

Really! I guess there are not too many people using midi controllers…
Well that's my addition to the wish list! Midi-in and Audio-In support for linux… A straight forward way to hook it up with alsa's aconect would be great.
Thanks for clearing that up for me, i can stop to banging my head now.

Sorry but you're saying that MIDI is not supported on the Linux version of Houdini or that MIDI is not supported on Linux period?
There are plenty of people out there using midi devices on linux and tons of aplications (mostly audio) that support it.

Here's a really especific one…
I'm trying to hook up my BFC2000 (usb/midi controler) to houdini under FC4. i've installed the ALSA sound drivers wich has usb/midi support and “aconnect -i” identifies my midi device with no problems, but it won't show up in the MIDI chop.
The few resources I found on this say that you need to patch the device to the program using aconnect or some other program, but houdini won't show up as a “subscriber” of midi data.
under XP this was totally painless…
thanks!

Hi, i'm trying to run houdini-8.0.410 on FC 4. Everything installed fine but when I try to run hkey i get a:
hkey: error while loading shared libraries: /opt/hfs8.0.410/dsolib/libHoudiniUT.so: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied
I'm really new to linux and i've tried all the few things I know to correct these permissions. But, so far no luck…
any ideas?
Thanks a lot!
Marcos K
