Thanks guys,
Your suggestion regarding recooking seems to be spot on J.C., and I've gotten around it to some extent by reducing the complexity of the sim (particularly the lowres resolution). Certainly can't complain anyway as the results are quite stunning with a little graft.

Apprentice 10.0.249.5 (Mac & Windows)
I've been having trouble with the Pyro walkthrough ignoring my cached files. If I close and re-open any project, it insists on re-cooking everything.
I've tried this under both Mac and Windows and get the same result. AFAIK I'm doing everything right: Rendering the correct frame range, saving with the ${OP}_$F expression (and tried manual naming too, i.e. lores_$F), and I definitely have Load From Disk checked.
I've spent 2 days trying to fathom this out, re-checking both the docs and even the tutorial video on Pyro FX, and can't see where I'm going wrong.
Am I missing something?
Cheers,

Ok that was strange.
I resolved the file format issue at least by setting HOUDINI_USE_NATIVE_FILE_CHOOSER in the environment file.
No idea why, but this had two side effects (pun not intented):
- Upres works now - and the uprespyro node is no longer harzarded out, so that's clearly a bad thing to see.
- Playback is vastly faster on cooked simulations.
Unfortunately when I switch back to lowres it still insists on cooking the DOP Network, instead of loading the cache. So any ideas on this still appreciated!
Cheers

set the display flag to upres node?
Yep.
Reviewing the tut video again, one thing I notice is that my uprespyro node is decorated with black & yellow hazard lines, where his displayed normally… does this mean anything?

I'm having the same problem, and more.
I'm new to Houdini, and have Maya & Max burned into my cerebum, so I'm possibly getting making very simple mistakes.
Following the Pyro FX tutorial video I too get no Upres version of the lowres pyro. I've rendered the lores to disk cache, and changed to Upres in the switch node… the first frame appears correct, but the following frames are no different; there's no combustion (that's how it appears anyay), just that glowing sphere…
I do have another issue which may or may not be related: Houdini isn't loading the cached pyro files. Load From Disk is checked in the Pyrofields node params, but it insists on rendering out the simulation when I switch back to Lores after rendering the Upres. The cache files are rendered in sequence ($F) so it's not that…?
Using a mac (OS 10.5.6) the cache files will only render to dfx, whereas the docs (indeed the default file fields) talk about ngeo and geo… I assume this is normal and they're just not updated? It won't actually let me specify an ngeo extension.
Any and all help appreciated… This feels like a lovely app and I can smell the power, but right now it feels like I've stepped through the rabbit hole and forgot to bring a torch
