Hi,
Link linking and shadow linking are supported in HtoA (reflection linking is not).
Attaching some test scenes for light and shadow linking.

I have encountered a case where the SOP cache kept growing frame after frame for heavy geometry translation (ticket #375), the workaround was to call sopcache -c in the Post-Frame script to flush the cache.
Actually… that ought to be an option in the Arnold ROP, created #667 for that

memory management mantra was WAY better, Arnold crashed running out of memory several time. specially handling textures with displacement and because of that we move the hole production to mantra.
is worth to mention the amount of money saved in licenses.
That's not what we usually hear, but that's entirely possible. The first things to check would be if the textures have been converted to a tiled, mip-mapped format (using maketx for example) and if the subdivision iterations are not crazy high.
I'd love to have repro scenes or even just detailed logs of some of your problematic renders. Which company was this in? I didn't hear from this from support but maybe I missed it. Please PM me with the info if you are keen.

Do you know how to apply and render Ptex files in Houdini rendering with Mantra or Arnold?
Arnold does not support Ptex at the moment.

I do find myself doing a lot of repetitive tasks beyond normal preferences to accommodate HToA
I'd be interested to know more about those tediously repetitive tasks for HtoA, maybe I can do something about it to ease the pain.

Hi ibaniser,
Repeating here what we exchanged privately as it may be of interest to others.
The issue when exporting your curves was that they contained degenerate primitives (curves with just one point for instance). The workaround is to append a Clean SOP with “Remove Degenerate Primitives” turned on.
I have now fixed this issue in HtoA and any degenerate primitives will be silently filtered out in the next release of HtoA.
HtoA ticket reference is #584.

I know the velocity blur has been problematic when rendering Alembic file from Maya with Arnold (you need to export the velocity as a color, or tweak things with SOuP I think).
Another option is to just render you rain with Arnold inside of Houdini with HtoA, which supports every kind of motion blur.
Alternatively, you can export the rain as a sequence of ASS files from the Arnold ROP, and then import that in Maya as Arnold standins. The motion blur will be baked in the ASS archive.

Ok, I'll try to repro with Arnold, but it makes no sense to get different render times or CPU utilization between rendering to Arnold with Softimage or Houdini.

the same exist when rendering using Arnold, once i load the 2k udim textures renders fine, with 4k textures just hangs
I did test renders with the same textures in Softimage + Arnold and no problem at all.
There is currently a bug in HtoA that prevents the updating of the textures in IPR as in SItoA (ticket #469), this should be sorted in the next 1.4.1 release. Other than that, it should really be identical behavior in both packages.
I'd be really keen to get a repro scene, are in based in London by any chance?
Also, if you can get your texture editor to save directly to a tiled and mip-mapped EXR or TIFF, Arnold will pick that up and you won't be using as much memory.

-heavy-This is not in our hands. Houdini Apprentice and Indie prevent the use of third-party renderers. We are discussing the subject with SESI but I would not hold my breath.
Any News on “Arnold Apprentice” for now?
As to Arnold, you can render with watermarks if you have no license or request a trial license on our site. But for now, you'll need to have access to a full Houdini or HoudiniFX license to try HtoA. Sorry.

Any news on a version for the latest production release 13.0.547? Earlier Houdini's don't run on OsX.X Yosemite.

LewulSadly no. This is because the Apprentice or Indie licenses do not allow to use renderers other than Mantra.
And not even with the watermark ?

ChrononThanks! I've added a big fat warning about Indie and Apprentice incompatibility in the installation instructions to make that clear.
Awesome, this looks great. I'm looking forward to learning more about Arnold's capabilities. Users should note that Indie and Apprentice have some limitations in allowing third-party rendering systems.
