19.0.594 works for me on pop!OS 21.10 even without the LD_PRELOAD hack,
no more random crashes at startup too,
so I guess it's fixed, thank you SideFX !!

I was googling xcb/QT related errors on linux and found this [askubuntu.com]
drew
This fixed the problem for us, except we were having it with Ubuntu 20.04/h19 (h18.5 was working ok). Curious to know how/where you found this fix? I wasted quite a few hours reinstalling nVidia drivers and other futzing around.
Cheers

In my case this fix is not working:qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, wayland-egl, wayland, wayland-xcomposite-egl, wayland-xcomposite-glx, webgl, xcb.
Ubuntu 21.10
That's a different error though.
You have to doto fix this one.sudo apt-get install --reinstall libxcb-xinerama0

Still no luck:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc_malloc_debug.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

It might be that the libc_malloc_debug.so.0 file is located elsewhere on Fedora. I'd check check if it actually exits at that location. If it doesn't, try to search for it in your system.

Same issue for 18.5, but that hot fix doesn't work for me.
Are you getting the munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer error or some other ?
Because the LD_PRELOAD trick should take care of that one ,even for 18.5, I've just tested it.

The munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer seems to be caused by changes introduced in glibc 2.34 which Ubuntu 21.10 is using.
Some functionality has been removed and now is only available when preloading libc_malloc_debug.so.0 (source [sourceware.org])
so the hotfix is to do
before launching Houdini with hindie, hescape or happrentice command.

As mentioned, Houdini works everywhere without big issues, sometimes you just need to install library or two.
It's more about the other software, GPU drivers and how much time are you willing to spend in the terminal.
Here are my 5 cents:
PopOS! (Based on Ubuntu, most applies for both)
+ it just works, as workstation but also as general “home” pc, movies, web, etc..
+ nvidia/amd drivers out of the box
+ non-free codecs for video etc
- deb based, so stuff shipped RPM packages (Renderman, Substance, Maya?) have to be converted by alien, and missing libraries linked/installed
- not supported by most software developers
Clear Linux
+ best performance, optimized for intel hardware but apparently AMD CPUs benefit too
+ pretty, slick, not bloated
+ installs RPMs fine
+ clean gnome
+ flatpak
- manual GPU driver install (although there are some user scripts online)
- new distro, not much documentation, some stuff requires more linux expertise
- not supported by software developers
- have to install non-free codecs to play some video files etc
Fedora
+ RPM based
+ easy GPU drivers installation via RPM fusion
+ development linked to CentOS, some stuff is newer/different but you are closer to official supported distro, without having ancient OS
+flatpak
+clean gnome
-still need to link/install libraries to get some software to work, not a biggie
-have to install non-free codecs to play some video files etc
“PRO” tip:
A lot of people miss photoshop, if you don't need all the fancy features, but, like me, you can't stand Gimp try Pixeluvo:
http://www.pixeluvo.com/features/ [www.pixeluvo.com] - Unknown, but cheap, slick, works, same shortcuts like PS

Is it possible you are overwriting the HOUDINI_PATH with some other entry in your env file ?
If so, you need to join the previous path like this:
HOUDINI_PATH=$RFHTREE\17.5.327;&
HOUDINI_PATH=“${HOUDINI_PATH};/some/other/houdini_path/”

Hi,
Is there any way to add alembic userProperties when writing out .abc files?
Such that can be later read by _alembic_hom_extensions.alembicUserProperty function later ?
Thanks,

Solved it! For anyone who might have the same problem:
VOP COP2 filter can do the job.
For sRGB images either linearize in the file node or use Utility-sRGB-Texture as “from space” in the ocio_transform. (not sure which one is better)
Now just need to automate it a bit with python..

Hello,
I'm trying to set up ACES workflow properly.
I have OCIO env variable set up, the render view is in ACES.
However from what I understood the textures have to preconverted to ACEScg lut too, to prevent unwated oversaturation.(source [cgrenderdna.blogspot.com])
Because I'm using Renderman I cannot use OCIO Color Transform VOP node like I would in Mantra, but I have to preconvert the textures.
I can do that in NUKE or Affinity Photo but that's not really convenient for updaing lots of textures all the time.
Some command line tool woul be the best, but i found nothing on OCIO in iconvert documentation.
Anyone knows a way how to do this?
Thanks a lot!

Awesome, it works now in my rig too!
I never though of pointing the posescope to those rotations, because they already have expression on them, since they are promoted.
Thanks a lot for your help

Thanks Michael!
Your test works, but the posescope is controlling bones rotations there.
When I added a null controller the same issue appears.
here is a modified HDA:

Heya,
I'm working on my first rig in houdini and I'm trying to use posescope to create “invisible” controls.
I have a null, its rotations are controling a few bones. If I set up a group in posescope to control rotations of this null everything works great - I can grab the geometry with pose tool and the null and bones are rotating as expected.
However if I promote roations of the null up, on the rig HDA, the posescope is not really working anymore. I can still grab the group with pose tool, but the null rotates only in one axis and by very small steps (0.222 etc..)
Is there something I might be doing wrong ? should the rotation control work with posescope even if thr paramaters are promoted ?
Thanks!

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Single license on dual boot machine?

Hi,
I'm trying to get houdini working on win/linux dualboot.
I made sure hostname is the same but hkey on linux does not want to accept licenses when I'm manually putting them in.
I noticed License server code is different on linux, so that might be the problem. Could someone who got this to work confirm that the license server codes match? Is the code something dependent on mac address?
Thanks!

Thanks tamte! That's exactly what I was looking for! I actually figured out the same solution just last night, with much messier VEX code though, hahah, will update with yours.
Thanks A-OC, This is what I was trying before, but that results in all the points being in the middle.
Thanks mestela, I needed Vex/Vop because I need to replicate this process many times and need it to be fast..
Here is the final result.

Hello Houdini magicians!
Would anyone know how to nicely randomly interpolate between 4 points in VOP?
(In the image I created the points by scattering)
I tried blending between the 4 points randomly but that puts most of the interpolated points in the middle.
Is trilinear interpolation way to go?
Thanks!
