hey there,
so I'm playing around with POPs, and just want to get some basic stuff sorted in my head. The help docs are surprisingly thin on basic info, I've hunted thru them but just get simplistic one-liners, so….
Using the create particles shelf, and looking at the result of the standard fireworks button, here's a few basic questions I'd love to get answers to:
(1) why is gravity not affecting the starburst particles? A gravity operator is in the pop network…. I thought that force nodes could be placed anywhere in the network and affect all the particles, but evidently they only affect the particle stream feeding in, not any created further downstream in the network. Is this generally the rule? It makes sense to me, but seems to be counter to what I saw in some tutorial somewhere.
(2) The network ends with a collect node, which I guess is there so you can add more nodes in a simple way, if you want to customize things. But, why bother connecting the color_dead (color) node to the final collector node? I disconnect this and all still works the same. So why's it here?
(3) In the final collect (“collect2”) node, if you switch the order of the input node, you get an error and the operator info indicates you've got an invalid source. Why does it matter what the order is when you collect particle streams?
cheers,
Mark

ah hang on, I think I just figured it out or at least started to. In the tutorial file, they have you copy some rbd objects to a different dopnet (for the cloth) but that caused an error in the dop import nodes for each object, and after that those nodes wouldn't work in the sim. I deleted all the dop import nodes and created a fresh static object for the tabletop that my cloth falls onto, and now there's no errors and the cloth hits the table.
So question:
in H10, to get a static object to interact with cloth, you bring it in thru a static object node? or are there other / better / more correct ways ?

hi - I'm trying to learn about H10's cloth dynamics and starting off by going thru the online tutorial called “Dynamics QuickStart”, which is for H8 but the only dynamics intro tutorial I can find. Obviously it's a little outdated but at least for the rbd section, it seemed ok. But for the cloth part, it doesn't work. I create a dopnet, add a cloth object and cloth solver and gravity and the cloth falls down. But I can't figure out how to get the cloth to collide with anything. Anybody know of a basic cloth tutorial somewhere? And also, I'd like to see a more up to date rbd tutorial as well.

Well, I don't know much about the registry or regedit.exe tool, so I'll just describe my steps and what I saw:
- Started up regedit.com
- Edit > find and entered .mplay_lock
- in the right-hand panel, 2 occurrences were found, showing name/type/data with name being something like 001 or 000 and data being .mplay_lock
- right-click on each and delete
Then when I tried to render, mplay opened and the render worked.
Maybe useful to know, just before I installed houdini 10 apprentice, I uninstalled houdini apprentice HD 9.1. Altho I played around a little bit with 9.1, I can't recall if I ever tried rendering. Possibly the issue actually lies with the H9.1 install and H10 saw that relic data and got confused. Anyway, now you know everything I know.

hi Steven,
thanks for your response. After deleting those entries from the registry, I was able to render without issue, but I followed along with what you suggested and indeed there is a file now in that directory with the name you indicated. And I re-did a render and it worked fine. So….. I guess it's ok.
Weird about the registry entry.
So what's the .mplay_lock file about? Just a file associating mplay with that instance of houdini?

OK – searched the drive and got nothing. Searched the registry and there's a couple occurrences in there, but I've no idea what to do with that.
I have to edit the registry to get houdini to render? nice. Is this kind of thing common with houdini, in users' experiences?
OK so I deleted any reference to .mplay_lock in the registry, opened houdini and rendered and it worked – thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated.

hi - thanks. There's no file of that name in that directory. Just in case I deleted the directory so houdini re-ran the post install initialization, and same problem occurs.

Hi – I'm learning Houdini using apprentice (Houdini 10.0.249.5) on windows xp 32bit. Just tried rendering via a mantra node and get this error in the Houdini consolde:
Warning: invalid .mplay_lock file detected
Warning: invalid .mplay_lock file detected
mantra: Could not open imager
Then mplay opens but shows a blank frame.
When I try to render again, mantra opens up an instance in background but doesn't try rendering anything.
Sounds like something similar is happening to other users… would love to render something with this package (!)
