My understanding was that my license of Indie would allow me to open other version files, but that there would be limitations to which versions could open which files.
I am finding that when I load project files from the Masterclass - such as the project files for the changed Oceans, I get a lot of error on opening - - usually “Skipping unrecognized parameter” errors, and often black screens or odd behavior.
Are the tutorials not set up for Indie folks? I know that my Digital Tutors sub had issues because you couldn't open ‘real’ Houdini files in APPRENTICE, but I would hate to find out that I can't utilize training resources with Indie.
EDIT: Another example - -for the file ocean_waves_baked, I get the unrecognized parameter errors, but it loads and SEEMS to work, but then if I attempt to render I get an error about being unable to load two textures.
Thanks,

Technical Discussion » First Work with Houdini Indie - License Downgraded?
- phloog

This morning I was working through viewport navigation, and to give me something to navigate around I created a sphere and ground plane, caused the sphere to emit fluid onto that ground plane, and all worked well in terms of emission and spread…I then rendered region a couple of times, and Indie gave me a popup window indicating that my “License has been downgraded” and telling me to restart.
Since I only licensed yesterday, is this just a teething problem? Is there something I need to do to keep this from happening?
I've had some very annoying experiences with some licensing schemes (life sometimes seems easier for the pirates!) so I want to make sure this isn't something that's going to hit me every X days or something.
EDIT: It looks like I have TWO applications on my machine - Indie and FX with the same version number…could I have picked the wrong one? If so, would it run for a while THEN downgrade? Sorry for all the questions, but one more: Can I UNINSTALL the FX version, or is that tied to my Indie license?
Thanks,
JT

Glad I looked around first - I have the same question, and also another that I might try to sneak in if there's no huge penalty for ‘drifting’ a thread.
There is a 1920x1080 limit in Indie…there is also an ENGINE (perhaps available separately, or is it a part of Indie) that allows movement of data into a package like Max or Maya. A two-part question:
a) Is there a way - legally and ethically! - to take an Indie file and render it at higher resolution in another package? Meaning is the resolution limit solely with respect to Mantra?
b) I am nowhere near the income limit for Indie, but my DREAM would be to produce something that VERYBIGCompany would want to buy/distribute. Imagine that happens but they want 2k or 4k resolution……I am 99% sure that Houdini will NOT read Indie files…..does this mean that if I'm offered big bucks I'd have to RECREATE all of the files in a full license of Houdini, or is there some way that we might work with sidefx to have the files converted? I know…low likelihood of happening, but if I DO want to eventually take off, I'd like to know there might be SOME option to get higher resolution without starting over.
Thanks,
JT

Using Apprentice HD, I realize that I lose nice features like FBX output, but I'm told that via ROP or SOP or something-OP that even with the Apprentice HD version I should be able to export a fluid surface from Houdini into Max.
Recognizing it has to use only features in Houdini Apprentice, can someone point me to a tutorial or list the steps of taking a fluid sim, and outputting it as a mesh to use elsewhere…I'd really like to see how these render in 3dsmax

I'm currently on that thread, actually….I tried one, but also did some driver work…since it's an intermittent issue I won't know if it worked for a while, and if it DOES work I won't know if it's the driver or the other….not very scientific of me, I'm afraid.

Yeah, i haven't given up yet. What makes me think that the card is fine - other than it works on other apps, is WHEN the glitches happen. I can make a scene of one sphere and it happens. I can make a scene of a sphere converted to a fluid and dripping over a torus and it works fine and fast. The UI is flaking out, regardless of volume of polys.
Edit: also, I agree about old machines and ANY high end package. I always dream that the next machine takes over and the old becomes a farm machine…but I end up with the new machine and a lot of idle old boxes taking up space

What I meant by in the past is that with gaming cards having so much power, most companies I deal with have embraced them and don't require dedicated high-end cards, particularly since many times the hardware is the same and the mfr are just throttling them down artificially.
This machine does great with very large/complex scenes in Vue, zbrush, max, city engine, etc. That is why I am thrown by an application that seems to be a max competitor, but also seems to require monster cards.
It looks like SOME folks have it running on lesser hardware, so maybe there is hope, but I am loathe to do a whole lot of rolling back of drivers precisely because of how many very high end pieces of graphics software run very well together on it now.

same boat as you. Seems like there might not be a fix short of ‘buy a new card and use it on a desktop’

Well, I have a nice XPS laptop with a 555GTX Nvidia card that runs Vue xStream with scenes having 3B polygons, ZBrush, City Engine, and Max2012 without a single hitch, but this OGL wonder is a nightmare.
I'd understand if I had a machine with a clunky graphics on the MB setup. But this software with its apparent requirement of high-end professional graphics cards is kind of lost in the early 90s.
All the major packages have realized that other/gaming cards can work well, yet here I am watching flashing black screens as i attempt to use it. I got the learning (HD) version for my kid to use, but he's not going to have a pro card so it's a waste of cash.
I don't need the license myself, because as noted I have some great software that actually works on non-boutique hardware.
It really did look promising, but this Open GL stuff is ridiculous.

Sad that I'm going to have to do that. I guess I'm glad I've got Max as well. I'm not seeing anything going on in Houdini that should cause it to act up on the machine I have. My plan was to have my kids use it on comparable laptops for school, guess it's $100 down the tubes. I have Max if I need to be tied to my desktop.
I see a few threads on this, and some hint that they are ‘working on this’…is there any chance of it, or is Houdini sort of stuck in the past (dedicated ‘professional’ graphics card)?

It looks like maybe my Nvidia card isn't good enough…that seems weird since it runs 3DSMax like a dream.
If it turns out this machine (Dell XPS with 555 graphics card) won't run Houdini, what are my options?
Can you unlicense a machine (this laptop) and license a different without hassles - moving it to my desktop?

I just bought/installed the HD learning edition. I'll admit I am just fiddling, but I don't think what I'm seeing should happen. whenever i PLAY an animation it seems to work, but when I PAUSE it the entire screen goes black except for a frozen window of the animation. I have to kill it via Task Manager.
Is this a video driver issue, or a bad install?
