It starts, gets about 1Mb down and then stops with a “Failed - File Incomplete” Same as AngelixDA above.
Tried with Opera, Chrome and Explorer on Windows 10 or Safari, Chrome on OSX. All act the same. All fail.

Technical Discussion » Which version of Python is best to work with H16 and forward?

Ok… this is good to know.
I'll have to scout around…. I'm thinking there has to be a way to run both versions on a machine and my “guess” is I simply have a shell script (or batch script for windows) that changes environment variables between 2.7 and 3.x depending upon what I wish to do. I use both OSX on my MacBookPro and my main workstation is a Windows 10 machine so what ever I do I need to figure a way to do this on both machines.
Thanks for the info.

I'm just getting started with Python scripting and wanted to know should I use Python 2.7 or 3.X. I've only just started using Houdini so I have no backwards compatibility issues with any version less than the current H16. I'd prefer to use 3.x since it appears that 2.7 is essentially a maintenance mode and there are other things I want to do with Python where 3.x is definitely the way to go.

So I watched the Jeff Wagner webcast today. Very informative. A lot went over my head although I get the jist of what he was showing. Being a noob on Houdini however I'm still getting over some of the setup and basic stuff which leads to my question. Right in the beginning Jeff opened up a “Technical” workspace and then in the Textport window simply typed the opadd command to get a list of operators. He then did a simply shell command redirect to put this list into a file. When I do the same with my install, all I see is the following:
/ -> opadd
Available operators
/ ->
There is no list. I'm running the latest release of Houdini Indie (16.0.557) running on a MBP with the latest version of El Capitan. I suspect I probably do not have an environment variable set up correctly but at the moment I'm not sure where to look.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

I found, at least in my case, that they obviously have set up a mini apache-like web server process. But… it also can hang and simply stopping and restarting Houdini does not fix it. I had to restart my laptop. (If I knew the process I probably could have just killed it in a terminal window). At a minimum I would think that on startup Houdini should just automatically kill and restart the server but apparently it does not do so.

Have you tried with the external browser setting?
In your Houdini.env file add
HOUDINI_EXTERNAL_HELP_BROWSER = 1
Might be a bit of a workaround?
Cool. Did not know you could do that but then again,….I've been using Houdini for a whopping 2 weeks now so no surprise. It loads fine in Safari. Using your environment variable would be nice given that directed help, ie hitting F1 when you are in a specific context would be nice as it should bring up the page.
I think the issue is with the internal Houdini browser. It obviously has some bugs both OSX and sounds like Windows too.
Thanks for the help. Drinking from the proverbial fire hose at the moment. Coming from Maya and Modo. Interesting program for sure.

I was browsing through the local help that is installed as I'm just learning Houdini and found that, at least on my Mac, I would start digging down the links to specific topics and a page would load, (I'd see it for an instant) and then it would just go blank. Restarting Houdini does not seem to have an effect.
I know the obvious fix is use the online docs but it would be nice if the local would work correctly because they load significantly faster.
I noticed too that this happens inside the Houdini Help Browser. If I take the same local URL and place it inside Safari for example, everything loads fine, so I suspect it is a bug in the built in Houdini browser.

Technical Discussion » Help! Houdini opens Apprentice instead of Indie, I have licenses for both....

I had this issue initially both on OSX and Windows. I did not realize SideFX installs shortcut links specifically for Houdini Indie, Apprentice and Houdini. Initially on both my mac and windows machines I just assumed the generic Houdini shortcut was what I should use so on my Mac I placed that on the doc and did the same in windows. When I opened up Houdini it defaulted to open in Apprentice mode. When I replaced these shortcuts with the correct Houdini Indie shortcut everything worked fine on both systems.

Just purchased Houdini Indie and I've owned Substance. I use a Windows 10 workstation and a MBP laptop. On Win10, the substance plug-in loaded correctly. I open up Houdini, go to the viewport, hit Tab and type Subst.. and Substance comes up in the drop down menu like it should. My MBP is running latest version of El Capitan and latest version of Houdini and Substance. Did the install of the Houdini Substance plugin. Open up Houdini, go to the viewport, hit Tab and type Substance and nothing comes up. My guess is an environment variable is not getting set correctly but no idea where to look. I'm a fairly experienced Maya and Modo user but just getting started learning Houdini. Any assistance would be appreciated. Made a post on the Substance forum too but I've not received any response.
