When dealing with heavy meshes/proxies inside houdini, specially when scattering, it's very important to have a decent preview of the meshes. Right now i haven't found a way to have a fast/easy to read point cloud inside Houdini, that is only read on the viewport and renders the full geometry at render time.
This should be done when loading the mesh, the current point cloud option doesn't let us specify the amount of points to preview, both in alembic and file node. Right now a 20mil mesh is previewed with 20mil+ points… when ideally we should have a threshold for example to only display 1% of the points.
Is there any solution for this issue?

Using OpenVPN to access our remote server (with mapped drives), Houdini is the only software that's having a big problem reading/writing files to our network.
houdini.env is pretty simple and has access_method = 2 (because of redshift), I tried =0 and =1 but same problem persists.
Opening an hip file is fast, but saving it is extremely slow. A 5mb hip takes almost 1min to save.
Opening houdini with several plugins like qLib, Quixel, MOPS, etc. is extremely slow… like 3-4min to open. While before when i was physically onsite, it took 15secs.
My internet speed is fine, 500/100 mbps. Other softwares don't have this issue, only Houdini.
Is there any solution for this?
Not only me, but a few of my colleagues have the same issue.

@seelan Thanks for the detailed explanation, right now i don't have time to continue testing it, but as soon as i have i'll report back, probably still this week, and do some more tests.

Ok, so i decided to test with the local scheduler and it seems to work.
Using “Save to disk in background” or Local Scheduler seems to return similar calculation times, however using the deadline scheduler in my local machine, it takes a LONG time, basically unusable.
Locally via “save to disk in background” = 29 secs
Locally via TOP local scheduler = 31 secs
Locally via TOP deadline scheduler = 4 minutes
This is a very basic sim. What could cause this discrepancy in calculation times?
It is also saving to the wrong directory (same rop fetch) compared to the local scheduler…..

After one file being saved (in the wrong directory), it now doesn't save any more files, it gives this error:

This was a regression caused by a recent change. Please update to 17.5.223 or newer to get the fixed version. In fact, I recommed that you get 17.5.224 (today's build), where the deadline node got more robust error handling, and support for empty repository field (allowing to use system default deadline repository setup).
I updated and tested again, leaving the repository empty seemed to work. However it does nothing, lots of jobs are submitted to deadline, 1 per frame apparently, and no calculation is made, and houdini crashes afterwards.
The job is a shelf explosion on a simple scene, so nothing especial. Any ideas?
edit: as a single frame, still no calculation, and no machines start the job. Here's how's it is appearing.

Thanks for the explanation. However even when starting at 1.25 it flickers a lot more.
For curiosity i tried input the density field instead of the velocity, and it worked, i just had to check interpolate velocity field, which in this case is the density one. Even with low res sims works “fine”. At least for my case it's good enough.
edit: I tried messing with the input timestep. So if i have a speed of 0.25, i'll do 1/$FPS/4, with integer frames off. It seems to work this way, even with low res sims.

I tried retiming a smoke sim i had and a lot of flickering is happening. As if the frames that are being interpolated get blurred out over time and then sharp again. I tried every option there is. It's unusable
Volume advected, 0.02, cubic interpolation, speed 0.5
This happens even in new scene with default billowy smoke preset.
Attached is a simple scene as an example.
Any ideas?

Technical Discussion » Whitewater split foam bubbles spray in H17

Hello, this might be a newbie question, but previously in other houdini versions you could easy split foam bubbles and spray via point groups generated by the whitewater solver. However in H17 it doesn't generate these groups anymore. I tried coloring by depth but it doesn't export the Cd attribute for some reason. What's the best method to do it now in H17?
Thank you

Hey guys,
I'm learning houdini and I am stuck with an issue over here. I'm sharing the file based on one that was originally made by Alaa Al Nahlawi - https://vimeo.com/188364130. [vimeo.com] The problem is that if we add a transform node to the first object, the mix between position, scale and rotation comes with wrong values. Instead of going from 0 to 1, it goes “erratic” from 0 to 1 but going up and down in the middle.
I've tried everything that I know (very little still) but can't solve this. Any help with be really apreciated!
Thanks,
Rui Romano
