ok, if anyone cares, i've figured out one possible solution.
I noticed that if I just threw down a background colour behind my file sequence and rendered from frame 1 till the end, i would get a proper render with a bunch of empty frames preceeding the frames i desired to be rendered.
So, what i concluded from this so far, is that you can't just render in compositing starting at any frame. You have to start at frame 1. Also, the initial frames can't be empty, so you have to put something in them, of the same dimension as your other files, like a colour COPv2 or something.

sorry for the ambiguity, i was hoping it was an easy fix for a common problem.
Anyway, i tried problem solving like j.c. suggested. I used a ramp COPv2 and animated one of the colours from frame 1 to frame 300. This sequence rendered perfectly.
What i think might be causing the problems is that my images go from frame 263 to 601 instead of 1 to 300. So, anytime i try compositing where the begining frame ISN'T 1, it doesn't work except if i render in the ip or mplay.
When i use a file COPv2 with a sequence of .picnc files that don't start at frame 1, do i have to do something differently?

i'm trying to render my compositing network. i know in Outputs there's a Composite generator so i'm using it. I've selected the proper cop network and the proper cop name (that which has the render flag on aswell). But the frames just render black. This only happens when the output picture is a sequence of images. If i output to the mplay window it works just fine.
any clues why i can't render a sequence of images?

i have a ball that disappears into some clouds and i want to render the ball and clouds separately for speed sake. How do i render the ball and cloud separately so that i can join them together in compositing while maintain the disappearing-into-the-clouds effect?

Nope. it's still not working. I've narrowed it down to using Materials though. If i use materials, it doesn't save properly.

ok, i think i've figured out my problem. i don't know if it will help anyone else, but this is what i did wrong.
you need the HOUDINI_COPTOPMAT variable set to 1 in your environment variables in order to use Materials, Tops, cops. Well, I set the variable in the user variables for just me, instead of setting it in the main ‘system variables’ section. If i would have followed the instructions how to do this in the 1st place, i would have been fine. i guess i was just trying to be safe or something by only setting it for me.
Anyway, it seems like i'm able to open all of my files properly again so hopefully that solved it.

I don't exactly have an answer for this but i've been dealing with it for a while and I don't even know the cause yet.
The following thread may be key to solving this problem, you should check it out. My current suspicions are in the houdini variables eg. $HFS, $HOME etc… but i'm not sure what yet. I'm pretty useless, so check out this thread:

does anyone ever have this happen in apprentice:
You save a file. It says it saves successfully. You open it later on only to find that the file is empty and all of your objects are gone. The file size appears correct as if there's something in the file. This is happening to me quite regularily and it's really annoying because when I save my files i don't have assurance that my data is actually being saved.

I'm going through the tutorial on the apprentice cd entitled ‘Image3D Volumetrics’. It cuts out near the end of part one so I missed some steps but part 2 does a little recap so I think I'm not missing anything. Anyway, the 3d texture generator doesn't work when I try rendering, I get the error ‘Unable to execute program: i3dgen’

I'm able to animate along a path ok, but going to tweak the animation I'm coming to some problems.
The animation on the path speeds up where there are less points on the track and speeds up where there are less points. I'm assuming that the amount of points on the path has a direct result on the rate of position change. Is this correct? If so, is there a way to change this so that the rate of position change is independant of the # of points on the path?

Technical Discussion » freaky reboot problem

i'm just wondering if houdini apprentice 5.5 has any tendency to cause random rebooting. I'm using win2000 and several times as i've been working in houdini, all of a sudden my computer will just reboot with no warning or anything. I'm just looking to see if I can find someone who's had similar problems or knows what may be the cause. Could it be a compatibility problem?
Just currently i had some Hard drive/ windows problems so i had to reformat, but before everything worked fine.
