does anyone know how to find out the bullet version being used for a particular version of houdini?
does anyone know what version of bullet is being used by 12.1.185? is it still bullet 2.77?

Technical Discussion » centos vs rh vs fedora

i've been using fedora 17. it's a pain because of the frequent updates which make things break. simple things are just broken. i would just like to have a stable OS. i always feel like the rug is being pulled from underneath me.
i was thinking about switching to centos or rh.
centos is basically rh without the branding and support (with centos receiving updates a little later)?
my main concern is the nvidia driver. currently centos uses an older version (290) of the nvidia driver?
how is it updating the latest nvidia drivers and how well do they work? do they work as well with the older kernel that centos uses?
how stable is houdini with centos?

hcustom -g -L /usr/lib64 -I /usr/include -lBulletDynamics -lBulletCollision -lBulletSoftBody -lLinearMath SIM_BuleltData.C

hcustom -g -L /usr/lib64 -I /usr/include -lBulletDynamics -lBulletCollision -lBulletSoftBody -lLinearMath SIM_SolverBullet.C
fedora 17 has bullet 2.81 installed.
i do get a SIM_BulletData.o and then hcustom puts SIM_BulletData.so into /home/username/houdini12.1/dso/
there is some older version of bullet that is floating around (maybe on git) that was compiled against version 2.71 and that works(maybe because sim_bulletdata is defined in sim_solverbullet), but not the version of sim_solverbullet.c that comes with houdini in /opt/hfs12.1.125/houdini/public/SIM_SolverBullet

i installed bullet 2.81 includes and libraries.
crap, maybe this is why i must be getting these errors when i try to run houdini with my own compiled sim_solverbullet.
symbol lookup error: /home/username/houdini12.1/dso/SIM_SolverBullet.so: undefined symbol: _ZN14SIM_BulletData27getBulletDataDopDescriptionEv

-i'm using fedora 17 with gcc 4.4.7 and houdini 12.1.125
-i compiled bullet 2.81 with debug options
-i compiled SIM_SolverBullet.C that was in /opt/hfs12.1.125/houdini/public/SIM_SolverBullet
i get an error when i try and launch houdini
symbol lookup error: /home/username/houdini12.1/dso/SIM_SolverBullet.so: undefined symbol: _ZN14SIM_BulletData27getBulletDataDopDescriptionEv
i was looking online for any clues. maybe the version of SIM_SolverBullet.C was compiled against a different version of bullet?
i think there there might be an issue with IMPLEMENT_DATAFACTORY

Technical Discussion » debugging: examining HDK objects

i'm debugging using gdb
i just want to verify this. if i have a debug session going and there is any instanced object of a HDK object (say for example sim_object) i won't be able to see inside that object correct?
all i get at the moment is just the address of the pointer, but i can't see what's inside.
the only way is to invoke methods (for my example, sim_object, maybe i would run getIsBaked() ) and print them out.
basically when i try to load what is at the address i get an error message “unable to load memory from the specified address”

i've been using fedora 17. i'm wondering if i should just use fedora 14 instead.
pros for 14
-houdini would probably have a better chance of working
-gcc 4.4 is the default compiler
-luckily, i can still use the latest version of chrome.
cons for 14
-might not be able to install the latest version of some software (xorg, ide)
-security issues?
pros 17
-can use the latest version of software (but do i really need that?)
cons 17
-things are always updating and breaking. it's been a pain.

installing the latest version of the driver (in this case 310.19) and deleting the houdini config files (in this case /home/YOURUSERNAME/houdini12.1) helped. now it is working.

i was doing some testing with a virtual machine of fedora 17
12.1.125 ran on vanilla fedora 17 (just default install from iso with no update)
after i ran the updater, it seems to crash and seg fault.
maybe it could be the kernel or xorg? so many things get updated though.

i'm running fedora 17 64bit.
i just use the software update gui to update fedora. so as of today fedora is running.
kernel 3.6.6-1
nvidia kernel module (kmod-nvidia 3.6.6-1: nvidia driver version 304.60)
xorg xserver 1.12.3-2
i've tried this on gnome, kde and xfce (have all 3 installed)
i also have installed and compiled gcc 4.4.7. i just put it in /opt/gcc-4.4.7, but gcc 4.7 is still installed in its default directories.

i've been using 12.1.33. it has been working fine
i noticed that 12.1.77 doesn't start
i'm using fedora 17 and everything is up to date (graphics drivers, kernel, etc)
i'm guessing this might be because fedora 17 uses gcc 4.7
is there a way to get versions higher than 12.1.33 to work?
this is the crash log.

seems like you have to put it in your ~/.profile (if you are using bash that would be .bash_profile)
export HOUDINI_TEMP_DIR=<your_temp_dir>
if you are using bash and fedora, it helped to log out of x windows and log back in for the shell to pick this change up. i just thought opening up a new shell would pick those changes up, but no it doesn't.

so i was able to set HOUDINI_TEMP_DIR to point to something else besides /tmp
seems like houdini is putting some temp files into my new tmp directory.
problem is, houdini still keeps putting vop_VEX into /tmp ( /tmp/vop_VEX )
seems like it's also still writing hfs*.tmp files to /tmp also.
i'm just doing a simple test. created a simple pyro fx setup from the automatic pyro shelf tool.
any ideas?

trying to decide which one would be better for houdini.
seems like the k5000 would be faster, but the 6000 has 2 gigs more vram.

ive mounted using //machinename/sharedirectory and ive mapped the linux share onto a windows drive and mounted that within cygwin as well.
yah, must be a problem with houdini not being a native cygwin app.
basically it cant change to the proper directory to find the resources it needs, in my case i3d textures.

i am sharing that linux directory using samba. i am using mount in cygwin to actually mount the linux share into windows/cygwin. hmmm, maybe i need to use something like smbmount if there is such a thing.
