Hi there, thanks for the responses. I am fairly confident that the issue is with my scene setup, or polygon count, as opposed to the version of Houdini I am running.
The problem occurs when I enable Forced Matte on my mantra node. At smaller resolutions, the image renders fine, but when I increase the render size to 1920x1080, the frame takes over an hour to render, and then the result turns out entirely black. When I remove the forced matte, this problem doesn't occur. I tried reducing the polygon count of my geo as much as possible, but I am still getting extremely long render times, and then when I render at max resolution, the render doesn't work.
I'll be upgrading my workstation in the next few days, and we will see if the problem persists.
Thanks for any help and/or advice

Technical Discussion » Black Render with increase in camera resolution

Hello!
I'm running into this issue where when I run my render with the resolution reduced to a quarter of the camera resolution, the render works fine, but when I return the resolution to the camera's actual resolution (1920x1080), the entire render is black.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Houdini Learning Materials » Loading Help Sample HIP files bug

Hello,
I'm running into an issue where when I try to load the sample hip files in any of the Houdini docs, the hip file refuses to load. I get an error loading message. I have tried multiple docs for version 9, 10 and 12.5, and all return the same error. I have also tried this on multiple machines, both pc and mac, to have the same thing happen again. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

I figured out the problem. Yes, it seems like there was a change in the most recent version of Houdini. What was happening was the texture wasn't accounting for the alpha channel of the image. To set this up, I had to create a shopnet inside of the geometry object (in my case a tree). Inside the shopnet, I have a Layered Surface Shader. To tell you the truth, to get this node, I found it in another person's scene file, and haven't yet been able to figure out how it was created. I'm attaching my file here so that you can retrieve the shader yourself. Just go into the tree obj, then into the shopnet. Also, it is important to note that you must change the texture tints to Diff+Alpha for Alpha to be calculated. Let me know if this doesn't help.

Hi there, I believe this issue is a result of changes made in recent versions of Houdini. Before, I downloaded a model of a tree from Turbosquid, with textures. When I created a mantra surface shader and applied the texture as a color map, everything worked in the past. Now, when I perform the same steps, the geometry of the leaves are seen, in addition to the texture on the leaves. I tried applying the texture map as an opacity map, but that didn't work either. If anyone knows what the issue I'm having is, please let me know.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Thanks for the info I've actually gone through all 3rd party tutorials for H12 and ya, i've found that houdini courses in the area are quite limited. Has anyone tried an online service like animation mentor or cg spectrum? thx!

Has anyone gone through the CG Spectrum VFX program? It lasts a single year, costs $10,000, and is focused on Houdini..
Looking at my options and could def use some people's opinions..
Thanks

Thx! I'll contact them asap. Any other ideas are also welcome. I'd be great if I could either discuss this with a professional in the field, or with a Houdini instructor. Thx in advance!

Hello! I've been using Houdini for about a year, and would really like to take courses in the program at a school. I'm in LA, and according to this website, my only two options are Santa Monica College and the Gnomon School of Visual Effects. I spoke to an admissions councilor today, and it became apparent that the majority of the classes at Gnomon are maya centric. It was recommended to me to change my perspective from focusing on Houdini, if I want a proper education at the school. This led me to believe that Gnomon isn't the right place for me. I'd like to learn Houdini, but I need to find the right program. I'm also not looking to earn an actual degree, but just to take individual classes. What I could really use is some direction. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Joseph

Hi there,
I recently created an animation with a wave tank. The issue I have is that the wave tank loses velocity over time. When I scoped the parameters, I couldn't find any of the settings animated. The main controls for the wave tank appear to be on the ocean spectrum node in the fluid_Tank_initial node, though once again, there are no controls animated. If anyone could provide advice, I would be most grateful.
Cheers

Hello! I've been learning Houdini for about a year, and I can't seem to find any relevant pyro tutorials out there. Any tutorial I could find was for Houdini 9 or 10, and the pyro tools have changed so much since then, that those tutorials are too outdated for me to learn from. If anyone knows of any tutorials out there that could be of use to me (using Houdini 12), it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Technical Discussion » Gravity Force Group?

Hello! I've got a pretty simple problem for the Houdini masters out there. I have a fractured object setup, and I want gravity to affect part of my fracture and not the other part. The idea is, I have a tornado and a house that is crumbling in my scene, and I want pieces that crumble off to fly into the air. I reverse the direction of the gravity, though with my current setup, the entire house starts to fly into the air, instead of the pieces that crumble off. I'm sure this involves specifying those crumbled pieces in the gravity force group parameter, but I can't figure out the proper syntax for the simulation to work. Perhaps I have to use the group dop node as an intermediary? If anyone has any ideas, I'd definitely appreciate the help. I've attached my scene file for anyone brave enough to venture inside.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!

Hello! I really appreciate the responses. Thanks for sticking with me (and plz excuse my noviceness). I tried out the steps tamte suggested, with no change in my scene. After the correct shader path and camera path are resolved, I can successfully render the .pc file via the ropnet, but when I try and open the file via a file node, the file doesn't work.
I tried circusmonkey's suggest as well, only to find that his file is similar to mine in that the pcwrite node is included in the shader. However I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how he wrote the .pc file out, with his current scene setup.
Sorry for the trouble guys and thanks for the help

Thanks for the help, but unfortunately the sample file in the help index didn't really resolve my situation. I need to be able to write the pcwrite file from the shader. Using the method in the example didn't apply in my situation. I am linking my project file here for anyone brave enough to take a look. If you go into my ptcmaker shader, dive inside and you will see the pcwrite file hooked up. I am simply trying to get that pcwrite file to write out!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Sorry for novice questions :p

Hello! Please excuse the novice question. I'm just really stuck and could use some direction. I have a point cloud write node correctly wired up in my shader. It also has an output path, directed to a .pc file. The problem is I can't get the node to actually create the file. Does anyone know how to make the pcwrite perform its function! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
