I am trying to transfer an attribute that I created in POPs up to VOPs, and I tried using point, but I couldn't get it to work. So I tried sending it through the global variable node by naming the attribute identically to Normals, but I cannot get it to pass thought. I just get a 0 value out of the Normal parameter on the Global variable node. Does anyone know what name it looks for when accessing the normals, because I believe that the problem may be there.
thanks
Karl

Does anyone still have the I3D tutorial that used to be on Odforce? I've been looking into I3D, but every forum just points to that tutorial that is no longer posted.

I used the point() and got it too work great, and Steve also thank you on the other topic I had posted. I was looking at two different solutions for my problem, and I ended up goin with this one, but I wrote down that too, because I can see that being very handy later.
I have hit another wall at the moment. I got the other attribute across ( ended up doing a create attribute and putting the point() in there), but now the information is there in the same order as it was for the particles (eg. part1 and primitive1 hold the same value). HITID is the number of the primitive that was hit, and I want to put all of those hit in a group, but grouping by expression with $PR == $HITID doesnt work because it looks at the HITID value for that primitive, and you cant just put in $HITID, because that just works as a true false equation. I was trying to find a way to order the values so that they match up with the $PR, or to make a new true/false attribute for the primitive so that if it correlated with one of the HITID's then it would be true. I dont really know how to go about this one; I've tried all of my ideas
thanks yall

you should try grouping the points for each part and just scaling them up and down for the pulse. you could key the scales using a keyed spare channel, which would also make it easier to manipulate.

So I have a Copy SOP with a popnet going into the template side and geo going into the otherside. I have created a copy stamp to be sent up to the geo., but the attribute that I need to apply to the stamp will not work. I turned on hitID in the popnet, and it still shows up on the Copy SOP spreadsheet, but when I put in $HITID it doesnt recognize it. I have tried renameing the attribute and creating a new att. that carries the same value, but none of those were even recognized as attributes. Even though the Copy SOP doesnt see them, it will work with $PT. Any solutions?

im not very familiar with the way that Houdini does photon maps(trying to learn now), but there should be a way to render just using the photon maps. I dont see an option to turn them off and on, so I would try turning the photons generated to 0 in ROPs and see if it will read the maps instead of writing. Also, anytime that you have a different light set up that emits other photons, you should make a new map.
good luck

I have a .hip that I created that populates a given are with geomety by attaching it to points, and the final result looks great, but there is alot of geometry that is not visible bc it is covered up by too many other layers of geo. I wanted to clean all of the trash geo up so that the render time was less. I am not familiar with Final Gather in Houdini, but I assume that it is similar to Maya Mental Ray in that it is based on rays shot out from the camera. (please correct me if I'm wrong, bc otherwise Im gonna waste a lot of time). my goal is to create an FG map of the geo. and delete any geo without FG data applied. Is there a way(attribute, etc.) in SOPs to read the FG map data. This is a large scene, so I cant go through and pick out each individualy.
Thanks

what about time releasing the glue at the point of impact? that should cause it to REALLY blow apart

andrew i ended up using a modified version of your approach. whenever i used a fan CHOP is started to crash my machine or bog it down. so i used constant to create all the channels and set them to one, before i multiplied them by the .wav. im going to try with default 14 channels that an eq. gives, and if the visuals dont correspond, i will change up the freq. thank you both

I have a .wav file that I have opened in CHOPs, and I am trying to get numbers from the levels of the frequencies. I would like to have it divided into about 28 bands, with a variable representing each. As the track plays, the value of each variable would change according to the frequencies level at that point in time. This is my first time in CHOPs, and I have only the help screens to learn from. The most promising way that I have found thus far would be to use a Constant CHOP to create as many band variables as I choose, and within each variable write an expression that would single out a certain freq. range and derive its value from it. My only problem here is that i dont have any idea of the syntax to use to look at different freq. of a wave.

i know its simple. I just forgot where the control was: how do you turn off the wireframe highlight at the object level, so that every time that you select an object it doesnt display that wire?

im trying to get a parameter within a SOP to reference that SOP's name. eg. geometry File SOP (named cup_1) opening the file named cup1 using a reference to the name. This way I could copy and paste the File SOPs, and they would open the incremented files without having to go inside each SOP. Also, is there a way to open multiple files with a single SOP

i have a mesh that is pretty much just a 3d porabola, and i have point sops that animate it on the Y axis using sin curves. i used a metaball later farther down, in order to refine the shape that i wanted. The meta ball is in the center of the mesh, and is tranlsted down to where it only goes about halfway up. for some reason, the area just above where the metaball effects is effected much less by the sin curves than area above and below it. should the metaballs have this effect on the mesh?
