circusmonkeyEver thought you hit Tab and started to type, only to end up with your network view in a weird state? That's why.
Yes it was honest … . I just don't get why it was changed

pezetkoThat's precisely the plan under consideration.
Cusped display mode with auto cusping and auto-recomputation by given angle threshold…
pezetkoIt will be an optional object-level property. Most likely turned off by default, unless starting with shelf-created primitives. We're acutely aware of speed requirements, hence why it wasn't introduced in H14.
But please don't do unnecessary (slow) recomputation of normals in other modes
pezetkoAnd neither do we intend to. We just want it to get to a stage where it's not embarrassing. Everything else is gravy.
IMHO for Houdini it's impossible to compete with other modeling tools without those features and even with them it would be very hard to compete…

pezetkoThey're already confused and many people walk away from Houdini thinking it's broken, due to the default cube looking “wrong”. It's a very hard thing to explain to new users.
I can imagine plenty of beginners that would be confused why their normals aren't exported correctly out of houdini while they can see them correctly with this “cusped” display mode. And even harder to convince them why they are wrong.
We already compute normals on-the-fly for display shading purposes. Our only concern in this case was that it may be too slow for large meshes, due to requirements for mesh connectivity and potential thunk down to vertex normals, if there's a cusp. However, for modelling purposes, this is something we're seriously thinking about doing.
For export, there would still be no “N” attribute, just like happens today. The target software is likely to compensate, since it already has this display feature implemented.
It's more about feature parity, than anything else.

NNoisDo you mean 1/2/3 by themselves, or while holding down Ctrl/Alt/etc?
Hi,
Downloaded aprentice and on a french keyboard this is not fixed completly as i can't have access to 1 - 2 - 3 etc shortcut on the main keyboard, again, it's only working on the numpad, so can't have access to spacebar + num etc… annoying
I want this to work dammit
Edit: Never mind. Installed French keyboard. 1/2/3/4 spit out &/é/"/' respectively  Does the French keyboard work for shortcuts properly in Soft?

NNois
Hi,
I'm tring to process an alembic sequence, where mesh is randomly disconnected (made of patches) but UVs are ok and needs to stay in place.
Unlike softimage when i try to fuse or consolidate points, the operator wipe the uv sample coord too so i experience big bleeds where patchs are fused.
I need this to compute smoothed normals.
Can i fuse without wiping UV samples ? Maybe another workaround would be computing normals considering disconnected adjacent polygons…
Does promoting the ‘uv’ attribute to vertex, prior to fuse, help?

rjpiekeAh, well. We got most of ithalfdan
Isn't everyone jumping on the VFX Reference Platform bandwagon anyway?
Indeed we are.

rjpiekeThis is unlikely to happen, unfortunately. We've made too many code changes that are incompatible with gcc 4.1, which would be a lot of work to revert back on. Plus, we'd have to figure out all new bugs again.
Any chance you want to (or don't want to but still can) start building with GCC 4.1 again?
We have a rather massive codebase built in 4.1 which we'd rather not rebuild using 4.4+ just yet.

v2n
On the other hand I can build the field3dtools plugin (the one shipped with the houdini toolkit) using gcc4.1.2 and I'm able to load field3d file (using the file node).
After a brief discussion with the gang, turns out that my information is slightly off (although gcc 4.1 is still crap). Apparently building with gcc 4.1 and running in gcc 4.4 Houdini will not work reliably.
However, what will work, is to install gcc 4.4, on a gcc 4.1 system, and build with that. The resulting code will still run on gcc 4.1 systems (e.g. CentOS 5), without gcc 4.4 present.

rjpiekeA mix of both. gcc 4.1 is basically broken, especially when it comes to vector math and templates, both of which we rely on heavily. Coupled with the fact that the number of studios unable to run the gcc 4.4 or higher builds was getting smaller by the day, it's demise was inevitable.
Apologies if this was answered many moons ago when the decision was made (my searching skills failed me), but why were the GCC 4.1 builds dropped? Was there a technical issue/limitation, or was it “only” an administrative annoyance?
After a long hiatus in building our tech in/for Houdini, we recently discovered to our horror that building plugins using GCC4.1 works, but they crash when actually used (in the GCC4.4-built Houdini 13.5).
That said, our gcc 4.4. builds are done on a machine that comes pre-installed with gcc 4.1, so there shouldn't be any libc issues (which was the biggest concern, for studios still stuck on gcc 4.1 platforms).
What kind of crashes are you running into?

jordibaresAll published and re-published. Apologies for how long it took.
Typos fixed on both guides 8 & 9.
Please redownload (nothing major though)
Halfdan, you may want to publish these two again.

Stefan_KubicekWe only put up completed chapters on that page. I.e. when Jordi consolidates the parts into a single document, we post it on our website.
Really? Where? I can only see chapters 1-7 for the past three days, no sign of Jordi's texturing chapters. What I miss?
The WIP chapters you can still find in Jordi's dropbox.

jordibaresDone. Feel free to delete.
Please Halfdan, put the consolidated animation PDF on the main page as I will be deleting it very soon.

Max EvgrafovFrom the top of my head, there's a couple of ways:
when I use node-paint, I can change value of atribute. But if atribute more i have some problems. can i paint subatribute ? For example "envelope weight“, ”envelope weight“, ”envelope weight".
- Use the Red/Green/Blue merge modes in the paint SOP.
- Write your values to a separate attribute and use a point wrangle to copy from that attribute to the target value (sample VEX code: "v@envelope_weight = @Cd.r;")
