hey 5dn any bit of info or ideas help, so i appeciate the response..i definitely think so too, i've been adjusting dissipation , bouyancy etc..at one point i thought i got it.. but by frame 155 the stalk of the explosion had totally disconnected from the emitter.. so it was back to trying to get just the right amount of force from the emitter to keep the explosion rising up without, blowing out of proportion or having it dissipate to quickly causing the stalk to look weird while the mushroom is rising

Ok so i've been scouring the net for a tutorial, but couldn't find any..so i decided to take at stab at it myself trying to make a nuclear explosion. ‘I’ve been using houdini for 11 months, so there's a huge amount of stuff i still don't know, so forgive my ignorance in advance. I'm trying to keep the ‘Stalk’ of the explosion to move upward without dissipating too much and causing the smoke to make that weird shape in my pic below. Also i'm trying to keep the mushroom cloud more “mushroomy”, i know that's not even a word.. lol Below is the hip file. My render pic is the first pic. The second picture is what i would like to accomplish. I know i'm close, but if aaaaaanyone can help me, or point me in the right direction on how to accomplish this task i would be most appreciative. Thanks guys :

Yes, Metal is a graphics API, like OpenGL. Houdini currently uses OpenGL to draw everything in the viewport (and the entire interface).
Metal is a different graphics API than OpenGL. Developers need to port their applications to it. It doesn't automatically accelerate existing OpenGL applications, such as Houdini.
According to Apple, it is 50% faster than their current OpenGL implementation, which pretty much puts them on par with Nvidia and AMD's OpenGL implementations on Windows and Linux.
Thank you for the quick response ..do you think you guys would implement metal as well ..is it hard to do ..meaning can it be done in an update or do we have to wait for Houdini 15 if you decide to try that route

SreckoMThank you i'm not familiar with this stuff ..so that great to know. So basically it speeds Loading,previewing and working inside the viewport?
That has nothing to do with render. More with viewport performance.

Can anyone tell me how will apple's announcement of metal on Osx El Capitan affect render and performance in Houdini ..will Houdini be able to utilize metal?

SreckoMI'm not familiar with Linux ..does Fcpx and pro res codecs work on that platform. Also what are the issues that Houdini users are having with open GL ..I've heard of viewport issues ..but what about rendering. How bad is the issues with working inside Houdini?
As a OS X user, I must say that someone must be nuts to give so much $ for MacPro. For that amount of money I can buy 2x same competing power.. And than you have HUGE number of problems with OpenGL…. Especially for Houdini users, I think that Linux is best option.

Related: Modo 901 was released today, touting a brand new ‘Clear’ viewport and the reports are all sounding kind of familiar; Nvidia Windows setups are killing it whilst Trashcan Mac has issues including restarts, weird viewport flashes and colours:

i spoke to apple today about all these problems going on with the trash can and OS X .He basically in not so many words said if i can…wait for the new OS X that's coming in October, it's based more on stabilty than features..also he hinted at a mac pro refresh as well.. take this with a grain of salt at least when it comes to the mac pro refresh..hopefully in the last 2 years apple will work on their OS X and open CL/GL.. plus graphics card driver issues

I'M on the verge of buying a mac pro..but after reading this post and a lot of other posts all over adobe and black magic forums..its getting more and more difficult ..it upsets me because all my programs are on mac OS X i also edit in fcpx..and use pro res codecs all the time for final renders. Can someone who has a mac pro( please list your configurations) tell me the problems they,re running into when rendering and working in houdini 13/14. It would help me make an informed decision on whether to purchase the trashcan or not. Thanks

ok it worked just dragging and dropping the hip file in houdini..is this the new method of opening older .hip files?

hi every time i try to load a previous houdini 13 project in houdini 14 it loads as an untitled new project. i have to use merge to get the houdini 13 file to work..is this a bug or am i doing something wrong

ok so i got mantra to render, but now my previously saved hip files originally saved on mavericks is not rendering thru mantra. only new projects i started on OS X Yosemite. i ran hserver in the Houdini terminal to get mantra to work on OS X Yosemite. Any body know how to get my previously saved hip files to render in mantra on OS X Yosemite?
