Hi Daiboushi.
Consider “chroot” as a method to put your software into a “cage”. That means after a chroot /tmp/fakeroot executable the executable can not access any folders outside of /tmp/fakeroot. Usually you have to set this “cage” up to resolve all dependencies of your executable. Like libraries and stuff…
Never done this myself though.

Technical Discussion » Rendering intances with Mantra, huge speed issues new H11 ma

THANKS A LOT for bringing up this issue !!!
I was close to believe, H11 was somehow mad at me….
Had a render with roundabout 20k instanced objects, that ran, slooowly, but ran to the end. But when I wanted to render a close-up the only thing that came to an end was my RAM (and my Patience). Now knowing it is an issue with iomplicit displacement it makes sense how it behaved….
Now it starts rendering, at RAM is just moderately used (mantra uses ~400MB on average per frame)
Phew!! Thanks again for the pointer!!

Hi Astrin !!
first said, its woth the effort getting it to run…
Have you looked with the task manager /Process explorer if there is a child process still running, when you assume its frozen ? Canidates for that are some setups that could hang sometimes like hsvg.exe (was the case on my system a gew times) building the icon cache and the font manager reading in your systems fonts…

Give it a try! Do not desperate, it's worth it.

Yeah !
That even works under windooz.
Thanks to the “self contained” nature of Houdini… all a certain version needs is in its own directory/folder. No DLL hell caused by houdini.

The only limitations are shown at this page [sidefx.com]. And if you don't mind that really little watermark, go for it !
If you want to render out sequences with an alpha channel just set an output file format that supports alpha, or render a separate alpha sequence.

so that would be two file nodes, one at “current” frame and the next to the following frame, both fed in to the blend shape node ? right !?

Hey Valentino !
Well, an idea might be this one: Have you seen the Lego ship form Ted Bradley in the Gallery ? http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1388&Itemid=304 [sidefx.com]
What about an OTL, that reads in an LDraw [ldraw.org] file, and brings that in to Houdini ?? (LDraw is a free Lego CAD software, pretty much like the LEGO Digital Designer [ldd.lego.com] but community driven. For the specifications of their file format have a look at http://www.ldraw.org/Article292.html [ldraw.org]
Ted uses a procedural modelling aproach, where LDraw uses Geometry files for each “brick”.
Just an Idea, as you demanded…

Have a look at http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_download&Itemid=208 [sidefx.com] right now the build cycle arrived at 11.0.520…
At least with my installed 11.0.514 the file is there. Depending on your patience wait until your *.520 build is available, or get *.519….

Two possible solutions for that one:
1st: Create different bgeo sequences for each of the possible speeds, and figure out a way to reference them. Like where evr you determine the required speed, you export a variable and refer to it in the file node
GEO`chop(“/ch/music/OUT_SPEED”)`.`padzero(5,1+($F-1)%25)`.bgeo
But that hat would be too space consuming on your discs.
2nd: Use the speed to “skip” some frames of your animation to achieve an effect of speeding up. Or display a frame of your animation for several frames to achieve a slow down. Something in the like of
GEO`padzero(5,1+(($F-1)*chop(“/ch/music/OUT_SPEED”))%25)`.bgeo
where OUT_SPEED is a chop node that computes your “speed”.
–
Anyway, it's just simple math, when you want your animation to look “slower” you display a frame of it for more than one frame, and if you want it “faster” you just skip some frames. But be aware, that it has its limitations. Outside certain bounds it might look really cruel (Flickering, shutter effects). Like the effect when you watch a car passing by through a fence, at the right speed it seems the tires are rotating backwards….

One question, i noticed that in the READ FILE (file2 node) there is no “File Mode ” selected. Is that OK and why ?
That is ok this way, because the file node is the first in row, it would not make any sense to write out anything… You can only read a file if the file node starts a chain…

aplink
I believe i have to apply this in the houdini file that i want to write on the disk using bgeo format. And then after I save it i guess i have to read it back again using the expression ?
Yes, usually you would have a separate file, where you write out your geometry. Imagine you have a simulation, that is really excessive on resources (Memory, time… you name it) then you would write that out, and use the file read to read in the geometry in your final scene…
you should bear n mind, that $HIP holds the directory where the current .hip(nc) has been saved. So you might need to adapt it.
Try this new example. The filewriter.hipnc writes out 240 frames of a rotating torus. The filereader.hipnc reads in the same “animation”, but at different offsets. Hope that helps…
You might have to ensure, that both files are in the same directory, and that the $HIP points to the samne directory, if anything goes wrong.
Workflow would be: Load filewriter.hipnc and play the animation once, so the geometry gets written. Then open filereader.hipnc and there you go.
Hope that helps clarifying…

Here is an exapmle…
the WRITE_animation part writes out a bgeo for every frame, while the READ_animation_24frames_only reads in ONLY the first 24 frames of the animation.
have a look into the filename parameters of the “file” nodes

Hi aplink !
Assuming your Bgeo is stored with 3 numbers like GEO001.bgeo and is 24 frames long this would help.
In the file parameter of the file node write:
GEO`padzero( 3 ,($F % 24 ) + 1)`.bgeo
the “+1” at the end is only necessary, if your files go from 1 to 24. Because the “%” (modulo operator) returns values from 0 to (n-1), where n is its parameter. if your files go from 0 to 23, then you just omit the “+1” at the 2nd parameter of padzero.

Hi Calysto !!
Are you setting ditinct IDs where you create your particle systems?
Look at the Attributes tab of your particle sources, and set them to different values.
That would avoid what Ondrej suggests being the cause of your troubles…

Not speaking for SESI, but that would be how I'd do it:
The builds are on the download page as soon as their “Makefiles” complete. And this takes some time. So if you visit the download page at say 10:00 there might be a new build for an other system, but not yours. If you visit again at 10:30 your system is there eventually, except the “new” build does not affect your system at all. But this should be documented in the changelog…

Chris,
just out of curiosity. How is your network setup, do you have a “fixed” IP for your machine?? Or is your Ethernet Address (MAC) changing ??
I am asking, because node locked licences usually use some sort of hash on IP and/or MAC to generate a “valid” licence key.

but for apprentice - is a .picnc, .ratnc
Non-commercial versions of pic and rat formats saved by Houdini Apprentice. Cannot be used by regular Houdini.
I had the impression, that when a full licence Houdini uses any .???nc files, it switches to watermarking mode ?? Am I wrong ?

Hi Steven,
could it be, your machine name has special characters ?
During installation did you choose “Apprentice Licencing”, or licence server ?
If you choose licence server, have a look under services with “mmc.exe” (The management console… Of course, only if you are using Windows… Which I guess you do… ) There should be two services running sesinetd.exe and hserver.exe.
But my best guess is you have at least one strange character in your machines name…
