Hi,
so as mentioned in another thread - it seems there is still something wrong with the update button.
Manual installation worked for me as well!
Using the auto update will not work though and if you press that button it basically destroys everything and i would have to reinstall the tools again.
But when not pushing the auto update at least it works. So hopefully that thing could be fixed and then everything would be perfect again!

I have just gone over it briefly to see what it is about and i gotta say:
Awesome lesson!!!
I hope some people agree with me that lectures for plain explanations are way better than livestreams. Livestreams should still be around, but you clearly so that the content was reviewed and whatnot. Non live without interruptions etc. should be the way to go for plain lectures, SideFX!
Really professional series it seems.
Thanks so much for doing this for us FOR FREE!! Time to start learning about rigging!

Hi,
The GameDevToolset also works on Linux.
If the updater fails for you, you can try the manual installation process described on the github:
Download the toolset and unzip them in your houdini home folder.
On Linux, that folder should be:
~/houdini16.5
What is the error that you get from the updater?
Here is the message that is prompted when using the Update Toolset button under Linux:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File “update_toolset”, line 178, in <module>
File “update_toolset”, line 24, in __init__
File “update_toolset”, line 28, in get_releases

return opener.open(url)
File “/usr/lib/python2.7/urllib.py”, line 213, in open
return getattr(self, name)(url)
File “/usr/lib/python2.7/urllib.py”, line 431, in open_https
context=self.context)
File “/usr/lib/python2.7/httplib.py”, line 1301, in __init__
context=context))
File “/usr/lib/python2.7/httplib.py”, line 1262, in __init__
context = ssl._create_default_https_context()
AttributeError: ‘module’ object has no attribute ‘_create_default_https_context’
————————————————-
This is without installing the Toolset prior.
In Windows i remember you could update or even install the Toolset via this new Button.
After unzipping the folder in the houdini16.5 folder unfotunately it still does not work. Still only shows the Installer button, but then the same message pops up!
Thank you for your help - hopefully we can get it to work! Really great tools!
P.S.: It is probably me though - i am really new Linux so i might be missing something very obvious!

Hi,
thanks so much for the message. I will need to check later to see what the error was. But i only tried the Updater.
Since that failed i just assumed it might not be working under Linux, but this great news!
I will update here later and share the message i am getting!
Thanks so much!

Hi Guys,
is the GameDevToolset available for Linux?
When trying the autodownload inside of Houdini i get an error message. Checking the Github made me realize there is only talk about Win and Mac OS.
Is there a workaround to get these tools going on Linux.
I am also new to Linux so i might be missing something super obvious. I really hope i will be able to get my hands on these tools again as soon as possible.
Thanks for all the hard work.

Thanks for the quick answer, Mike!
I know its a little embarrassing, but GitHub is kinda hard for me to understand.
Hopefully that AutoUpdate Button finds its way into 16.5

Hi,
i wanted to ask if there are already some things we can learn about from the GameDev Tools that will be available in Houdini 16.5
In the last presentation Luiz and Mike gave at SIGGRAPH we got a little roadmap on whats to come:
AutoUpdating deployment
Examples and Samples
as well as
Photogrammetry
Animation Decomposition
Pivot Painter (already out i think)
Imposter Tools
Destruction/Fracturing Workflows
In the new teaser for 16.5 i saw “New GameDev Tools” at the very end of the teaser at the end of the “credits”.
Is there maybe something we can already hear about?
All the best!

I was also surprised that i had gotten an answer on older RFEs last week saying some of them will be implemented in the next major release. Maybe something is coming!

Sorry fraspo - i totally missed that!
Im very exited that SideFX plans to do a series on Rigging. i hope it wont be webinars - but focused lectures. I think this is important that they just teach it what they think is best and then they could still do additional webinars.

Technical Discussion » Curve-Snapping Question

Hi,
i know that there is a curve-snapping function (via primitive snapping) but could someone let me know if it is possible to curve snap similar to how it is done in maya.
In maya you could hold down the c-key and and middle mouse click and drag on a curve.
This way you could move an object along the curve easily be cause it was locked onto whatever curve you select.
I dont seem to be able to do that in Houdini. Am i missing something or is that really not possible?
It would be a huge time safer i think, because now you have to go back a forth. I hope it is clear what i meant. The snapping works but is there a way to have it lock on the curve?

Hi,
in case anyone was wondering about this and has not seen the talk from Luiz and Michael:
They have provided a little roadmap at the end of the video - yay!
- Photogrammetry
- Animation Decomposition
- Pivot Painter
- Imposter Tools
- Destruction/Fracturing Workflows
Very curious about all of those! Here is the video:
https://vimeo.com/228233111 [vimeo.com]
The UV Tools look really great! I wanted to ask if you have an idea when the AutoUpdate “function” could be made available.. because honestly, Github really confuses me and i dont even know if i have everything correctly downloaded etc.^^
Anyway great work!

We will see - i think Luiz and Mikes presentation will involve some sort of new UV editing workflows. So there might be some improvements in general. But that one was not uploaded yet.
But yes - i agree it is extremely tedious - and as mentioned by a poster (actually i think that was you^^) before it should work with points, since it is stated in the docs.
EDIT:
Actually we seem to be getting some new UV tools - check the end of the presentation!
