MartybNzLink's right up there on the Support menu. Go crazy
If we could filter out a forum when hitting ‘View Posts Since Last Visit’ that would induce a natural delay, so a discussion can take place.
Can we RFE that please
Personally, I've been wanting an upgrade to the forum software for a while now. Preferably something that marries the convenience of a mailing list with the forum way. What can I say? I prefer mailing lists, I'm just old-school that way.
There are some technical bits and pieces in the way of a straightforward upgrade, however.

The Houdini community is very helpful and friendly if treated with respect to their culture. Getting an idea across in written form is not always interpreted in one certain way, that's how it evolves into a discussion where things can heat up. Especially with language and cultural differences.
Maybe I didn't spell it out quite clearly in my initial forum post, but my intention was that folks from other packages could come here and voice their ideas freely without judgement. Obviously, in this case, SI users, seeing as they have been abandoned by the curator of their software-of-choice. Now, moving forward, we'll probably rename the forum to fully embrace curious minds from other packages.
That said, it is understood that workflow in other packages is different from Houdini's. It was the intention here to attempt to figure out which differences make people hesitant to adopt Houdini as their package of choice. A big part of that is allowing new/potential users to have a clear voice as to what makes them go “wtf?” and what makes them go “that's awesome”.
If awesome, we can pat ourselves on the back and feel pleased. However, with the “wtf?” part, we'd like to see if there are ways to improve the software, without losing sight of what truly makes Houdini Houdini, and in the process make it a more attractive choice to non-users.
It's ok if the ideas are sometimes a little strange-sounding, we (SideFX) aren't just going to run off to our computers to implement them, just because they've been typed out on a forum. As with any other software endeavour, we'll be judging them based on their merit and how well they mesh into the existing architecture/system/spirit/ethos.
We will all benefit from that. There's a lot of things old-time Houdini users have gotten very much accustomed to; things which might be completely sub-optimal to begin with.
However, for that to work out, I'd like to request a little bit more understanding on our behalf, the Houdini community, and a little more civility from both sides.
So, please, from now on let's act as if we're grown-ups. We're all in this together. Mmmmkay?

MartybNzThe ‘d’ is lower case. It's a real name. Don't upset my mom
hmm.. You do realise that HalfDan is a former SI programmer and the so-called “analytically mind” is in reality a SI mindset.

GyroscopeThat's how I understand it too, and I completely agree with the request.
But no pane as far as I can tell is there for you to organize. You cant create a subnet from selected items in List View. You can't move one item from one subnet to another in Tree or List view. Unless you can and I can't find it.
Ideally there should be some indication if re-arranging nodes, that have connections, that they will no longer be connected once moved around in the hierarchy.

Does it make sense? That way I will keep the dropbox account healthy and still be able to have really quick iterations with the various fixes and corrections.
We'll be more than happy to do so. Just ping me offline when a consolidated guide is ready and we'll add it to the ones already listed.
Awesome work, Jordi. Can't thank you enough.

FruitsWe'll be mirroring these on the sidefx.com website shortly. I'll post a link as soon as they're up.
I want to check it out while waiting for sim but dropbox is blocked at my work.

twodIf you want to be particularly evil, you could also try to change the value of $HOME in your launcher script (I just tried pointing it to /tmp and nothing seemed to break, YMMV however).
Your preferences are stored in your home directory ($HOME) in the houdini13.0 directory (or houdiniX.X, depending on the version), so you should be able to copy that to a USB stick and tote it around with you.

azurecgiLog a bug with support. They can easily accommodate 14Mb files (although you might have to send them the file separately, rather than through the web UI). You can do this even if you're using Apprentice.
Anyone got any ideas? I can supply the obj file if that would help, but it will have to be via another means than this forum as the filesize is over 14Mb.

Don't know if devs listen but i'm dealing with some troubles with bevel and polyextrude…
Bevel misses “keep points shared” options of the polyextrude sop..
…and polyextrude sop misses badly collision management with insets and corners (so the bevelop too)
Rest assured, we're here
Do you mind logging a pair of bugs for these, with a scene attached (and preferably some ‘expected result’ type thing).

ben4096Yeah, we're working on fixing this. Some of the problems are rather ancient in nature (hello X11!), but I too would like to be able to type in my name in the Font SOP, accents and all.
I just get a mac french canadian keyboard, qwerty but with all the french stuffs (éèçà^¨) and nearly everything is fine but no <>. Too bad…
US Keyboard seems to be the only fully working option.

Derek MondelliBeing a former Softimage developer myself, I can confidently state that I'm already in a fairly good position to handle the interpretation
This way one of their own internal developers can become an invaluable interpreter to the rest of the the Side Effects team, on our behalf, demonstrating - live and in real-time cool ideas they may be able to use and even improve upon.
There's a lot of good stuff in SI (and other apps too!) that we can translate to Houdini, while adding our own slant to it along the way.

With the very recent announcement that SI is being retired, there's been a lot of discussion in the SI community on what to do next. Many have expressed an interest in moving to Houdini, at some point in the future, and are understandably wondering what might be involved.
We've set up this forum, for you, to provide an avenue of discussion about this. If anyone has any stories about a recent transition to Houdini, please feel free to share any details, so that others might learn.
This forum will also serve as a place where SI users can tell us how they would like us to improve Houdini, to ease any future transition. If you didn't know already, you can always try out our free version [sidefx.com]. Once you've dipped your toes, feel free to post about it, the good, bad and the ugly.
While Houdini is often regarded as a pure TD and VFX tool, we're always looking for ways to make it more artist friendly, and expand its usage beyond its traditional VFX roots. To this end, we've set up a dedicated user-experience team, spearheaded by yours truly, to look into ways we can improve Houdini. As we all know, SI is known for its artist-first approach, which is something that Houdini can learn a lot from.

I'd like to take the time in the next few weeks to dive into a thorough testing of Houdini's modeling and then come up with an organized list of things (with bullet-ed categories and examples were possible) that need improvements or need to be added altogether in order to make Houdini modeling friendly and attractive for artistic minded people too.
My question is this: is SideFX (or the community) interested in such a thing?
Yes, please
I'm looking quite closely at viewport interaction in Houdini and how we can make it awesome. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Andi Farhall
So i'm learning Houdini, and i'll probably have a continual stream of questions so please be gentle.
Great to see you here, Andi! Been a while
Keep them questions coming, I'll try to answer as much as I can. Let us also know how we can improve the app. We understand that it is by no means perfect, especially when it comes to viewport interaction and all that jazz. However, we're very much looking at that part and we'd love to hear your feedback on how we can make it better.
