It all depends on your budget. For $1200-1500 USD you can put together a great machine.
What i do is find the parts which are the best deal - by reading reviews on sites like newegg.com. Why buy a Quadro FX 5600 card if a $200 8800GT will do just fine? You get the point.

I am on a 4 Mbit connection and after i let it cache for a few minutes (by starting it and pausing it) i can jump to any point.
Back to the DVD - finished watching it and am glad to see that the second half is quite good as well. Proceduralism just looks easy when David Gary does the roller coaster ride project (there is no screenshot of it on the website, but it's mentioned under Understand Procedural Selections). I'm not a Houdini noob, but am glad that I bought the DVD.

I went dual boot and was wondering why 9.1.179 would not start in Fedora 8 -
invalid license server key error - probably i have to uninstall Houdini from my XP x64 partition…

I read in a few threads that the Linux version is faster.
How much faster are we talking about - specifically for POPs and DOPs? My current system is quad core, 8 gigs of RAM, Windows XP Pro x64. Is it worth the trouble of going dual boot and having to hunt for a bunch of libraries (not necessarily because of Linux). I am trying to decide not just for the free Apprentice, but also which version of Apprentice HD to buy when the time comes to render for my demo reel.
Thanks.

A few months ago, while I was watching some other CMIVFX titles, I noticed that you could see how much the player has cached (in dark gray color on top of the light gray timeline). Now I don't see that. Did something change?
Also, if I leave the player to cache for a few minutes and then drag the time slider too far it automatically rewinds and restarts the video from the beginning. That has to be fixed - let it go back to the last cached frame, don't rewind it.

I've watched the first half of “Houdini Fundamentals” and so far the quality is good - Gary has done an excellent job explaining the philosophy behind Houdini and the general workflow. If you're a total newbie, don't worry if Gary does not explain all shortcuts he uses at the beginning (like p to bring up the properties window) - he explains them later.

Garman has released 4 DVDs thru VizyAcky - http://www.vizyacky.com/vizy_acky/dir_dvd_training/dir_dvd_training.php [vizyacky.com]
Re the shipping - 2 day air is expensive regardless of the seller. You have to take it to the Gnomon Workshop, btw.

Very useful. One suggestion - make the links to external sites open in a new tab/window.

Unfortunately, this discussion seems to have taken the wrong turn. My original intent was to invite pros who might be interested in providing Houdini online training at fxphd to step up and contact the deans.
wavesmack, afaik, your DVDs have been mentioned a few times on the fxphd forums with positive comments. If you think fxphd has ripped your ideas, you may want to contact Mike Seymour and/or John Montgomery. My impression is that both of them are some of the very few people that are willing to spread the knowledge around - besides fxphd (which is dirt-cheap), there is fxguide and fxguidetv.
booblebee, you don't know what you're talking about. Seems to me you only registered to post this comment. See any of the other forums where fxphd is mentioned (cgtalk, vfxtalk, etc) - there's nothing but praise for the value these guys are providing.

There are quite a few people clamoring for Houdini training on the fxphd.com member forums. I suppose the ‘deans’ have not found an instructor yet. If someone has the chops and the time, they might want to contact them.

There was a half-day course at Siggraph 2007 called “Urban Design and Procedural Modeling”. Basically talking about creating cityscapes for games and movies. Definitely a niche where SESI can be a player.
