That's a big problem now, that's why few people would build scenes in houdini.Houdini needs a new object-layer system just like other DCC.

Wow, this is really impressive. The question is: is it faster than the sparse pyro solver running in opencl mode?

Cheers
CYTE
The question is the sparse pyro solver doesn't support opencl yet.

Come across this awesome asset.

Axiom is a sparse, GPU accelerated volumetric fluid solver for computer graphics and visual effects. It’s key feature is the custom OpenCL volume data structure thats lets sparse simulations run on a GPU.

Hope Houdini could implement this tech in next version~

Maybe if sidefx integrated a stock mograph menu easy to implement , in theory replicating c4d in houdini should be relatively easy for sidefx - like MOPS but more integrated and more expanded motion graphics operators

Out of curiosity, what improvements to integration between MOPs and the rest of Houdini are you looking for? I'm always looking for ways to make MOPs more accessible.

falloff with pop/gas force to control simulation would be awesome!Looking forward MOPs Plus~

I'm glad Cinema 4D is finally going to start delivering on its promise of being a procedural application. It has only taken them 22 releases to begin getting the pieces into place for a comprehensive procedural system. More power to them.

then houdini will be a full pipelien production software finaly
I chuckled…

Most of us motion designers won't model and assmble scenes inside houdini,i really hope we can do everything in houdini oneday

I think it's a fightback for houdini, and the best part is the node-based system can be combined with original layer-based system.

If houdini can learn from C4D,adapt a layer-based system, maybe modeling and scene assmble will be much easier, then houdini will be a full pipelien production software finaly.Just my opinon.

What do you think?

Midphase
Houdini Apprentice has a node-delay instancing issue that has been reported by myself and others, and which for some reason SideFX continues to ignore. Not sure why, considering that Apprentice is supposed to be the “gateway drug” for buying a full version of Houdini, so it would make the most sense that Apprentice run smoothly.

Launch times are also crazy slow with Apprentice, and apparently the issue isn't limited to OSX as some Windows users have also reported similar issues.

Someone mentioned enabling File Sharing in the OSX Network settings, but in my tests this didn't yield any speedier results.

All I can say is that Houdini Indie is as quick as one would expect, so the issue does appear to be limited to the Apprentice version.

yes,that's the truth.

I'm using the newst iMac(upgrade to 40GB RAM and 512GB SSD) to try Houdini 18.0.460 Apprentice, but when i create nodes, even a simple box, there will be 1-2 seconds delay, this drives me crazy!

To compare, creating nodes on my old Macbook pro is very smooth,WHY?

Houdini Lounge » the best way to import complicated models into h?

I usually model in c4d,then import them into houdini to layout the scene,do lighting, shading and simulations. The problem is if the models are complicated(eg.CAD models),it’s so tedious and time-consuming to import them into houdini, and re-split,re-assign material to different parts,re-adjust the pivot…

It’s just so easy in c4d to build a scene using imported models. But in houdini,it’s way more complicated.Maybe i’m doing wrong?what’s the best way to import models into houdini?

@wanglifu - Houdini Launcher essentailly manages this. Give it a whirl and send SESI feedback.

that’s a good move,although I can’t login…

I will add anther one:updating houdini dailybuilds is painful, you can’t update inside the software or just download/install the updating part, actually you have to download the whole software and install it again.LOL

Andr
regarding permanent autosave, I quote a response I got from the support just few days ago:
The reason why we don't make this option stick is because we think there is a fine balance to what users want when it comes to opening/saving very large (enormous) files which might interrupt their work. The way to have the autosave always on, is to put the hscript command “autosave on” in one of your 123.cmd or 456.cmd files.

I think the decision should be made by users,so one option in settings(permanent or not)will be fine.

the little things about houdini

Houdini is very good for advanced 3d tasks, but sometimes you will find it lacking many basic functions. Those little things will slow down our process.from a c4d user and motion designer’s perspective ,I really hope houdini will pay attention to those little things.

01.permanent autosave option.i know there is a script, but you should really give user the option to turn it on or off natively in houdini.

02.a little icon showing the project has changed,and you haven’t saved,in c4d it’s a * .

03.Hip file preview thumbnail.this will be a lifesaver,please,please.

04.drag and drop support.again, there is a python script, but you know.

05.multi-window support.when I want to open more than one project at the same time,it’s so annoying to start another houdini.

06.the curve node.it really needs some big improvement, the functions now are so limited.you can’t even select multi points at a time,it’s miles away from c4d’s spline module.

07.the font sop.houdini’s fonts manager is very outdated, you can’t scroll up and down, the font does not have a preview.

08.the ui.maybe a more modern and flat version?i don’t know,I just feel it’s not so intuitive now.

Those little things will have great value for motion designers,if houdini wants to attract more c4d users, please pay attention to the details.

Sorry for my English.what’s your opinion?
