paintcolorvolume SOP creates volume(you have option to give desire color) based on curve which you can draw freehand on viewport.
It needs geometry to project onto(volume to be drawn) in first input. Other two inputs are optional.
In second input you can feed your own optional vdb volume(no Houdini volume) then this will be used instead of default volume inside asset and Voxel Size under Volume tab will not affect anything. Don't be surprised because it's linked to vdb inside asset. And color of input volume will be used instead.
Third Input volumes to be stamped on drawn curve.

Then for the other issue of picking up the simulation from the last chached .sim file.
How exactly does that work?
Because activating “Playback Simulation” seems to only play the frames it has and then simulate nothing after.
Also, having it play without “Playback Simulation” on gives me the same result.
You need to read .sim files either in file dop or file sop. Preferably file sop.

I've done it with a different simulation, with similar amounts of particles, and the files there didn't get larger than about 250MB. But with the current simulation, where I generate particles for only 5 frames, they go up to 5.3GB, getting larger every frame and it's not even half way the simulation.
Is there a reason why the .sim files keep getting bigger?
.sim files store simulation data to continue simulation. That's why these files are larger than .bgeo and tak longer to load up.
This is not ideal way of working. Find out why Houdini keeps on crashing and write out .bgeo.

fixed by putting in a Color SOP above the channels node.

Because your geometry doesn't have Cd attribute. Add it first by using color sop or any other attribute creation method.
BTW you are using copy sop. So why are using CHOPs not copy stamping?

You can also use popforce dop if you want to avoid popvop.

Little more stiffness and drag force should work.
Can you please show me how to work with the drag? (as stupid as this request may sound… but drag just slows it down…)
Maybe if I increase both drag and gravity it could work? Will try this one also later :mrgreen:

You can animate drag value or activate it after certain frames when you want your paper to settle down.

Now POPs are in DOP land. So I'll go with POP simulation then instance geometry on those.
Behaviour you are looking for can't be achieved with POPs. I was wrong, didn't see your reference. Cloth is best.
