Hi.
1. It is a good idea to assign guides, clumps and skin geometry by selecting sop.
2. To make assign of fur procedural at sop context
Houdini is great! O'right?

2. I can be wrong but Mantra procedurals work on per-object basis so you can try to create material with procedural inside it and then assign that material using Material SOP but it has no sense.
f = conserve . diffuse . advect . add
