Hi guys!
This is my first post here…
I'm an FX artist making the switch from XSI and MAYA to Houdini and so far having the blast of my career!

I'm looking for some help for a personal project that i'm working on.
Basically it's a plane crash!
I have modeled the plane (uploaded picture) with different pieces and tried different tests and setups in Houdini with basic geometry…
I ended up with something i wanted with the Cloth Dentable object and here's the results: https://vimeo.com/32943460 [vimeo.com]
but when I use the same setup with the plane model things start to be really heavy (3 days non-stop simulation and haven't moved a frame on my Xeon 12core, 24gigs ram)…
So i decided to simulate a RBD sim first then drive each part of the cloth separately with the RBD cache….

Some how I can't manage to drive the Cloth DopNetwork with a cached RBD sim…
Any help, recommendation, or similar setup i can look into ???
Don't know if that will work or if it's the way to go in Houdini but i'm open to different solutions!

thx
lari

Hey tari,

welcome to this forum!
first of I actually thought you'd be able to track geo deformation by checking
“support changing topology” in the cloth solver, but I might have been wrong because it didn't work. So I played around and go it to work with a SOP Solver, check out my attached file.

Btw, it'd be really nice to see your tear settings on my file, I haven't played around with it much, but couldn't get it to tear dynamically right away and didn't want to start painting the tearthresholds …

In any case, you need to write out the RBD sim to disk with the Rop Outputdriver in the scene first before you can run the Cloth Sim, they're in two different Dop Networks!

Oh and you might wanna see if you can get your fingers on Hou12 beta,
the cloth simulations are waaaaay faster there than in 11.

cheers,

Manu

Thx Manu for the quick reply and the help!

It looks like its a nice solution for what I need! I'll give it a try on the plane and post back the result or maybe another problems !!

Regards!
